Diving right in from the panhandle!

Hello everyone! I'm Ashe.
I just nabbed this beauty of a 1985 RX-7 GSL after getting a fever for the 80s that could only be cured by an era-classic sports car. With a relatively small budget I was expecting a project, and I started out looking at a Porsche 944. Luckily for me the thing wouldn't start in my presence (felt bad for the poor seller "it was running great!") So I went straight to look at this RX-7. Entirely stock and incredibly well maintained by a drag racin' fellow. I immediately fell in love, and what a great mate for my 2016 Mazda3 daily driver, zoom zoom!

I've been researching with great obsession and I'm determined to do right by this marvelous car. However I'm new to cars, let alone a rotary engine! So this is how I learn. I get the "antique" plates on monday, until then I've been visiting the garage every few hours just to check on it.

I'll be pouring over this forum and any other resources I can find. I'm happy to hear stories, tips, and comments from all ya'll more seasoned folks.

Welcome!! That looks like one beautiful 7! Do you know any of the car's history?

We've got some records - the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual was meticulously followed but that only goes through 60k and this original engine is still purring at 190k! From the records it appears there were ~3 other owners, all in this local area. The maintenance records stop at about 2000, when the guy I bought it from acquired it. He and his pals did all their own work, and some good work they did! He was about to bridge the engine and do some additional work to make this baby part of his drag racing toys if we hadn't bought it. I plan to go to him if we get in over our heads... Or "get bored with it and want to do a little more" as my husband put it.

My husband is determined to fix the characteristic oil leak (but it's really slight). There are a few super minor interior pieces that I'll be on the lookout for, and we're in flux about what to do regarding the louver - it's broken in two places after multiple failed repairs. I quite like the rear spoiler look so we might look for that.

We are also going back and forth about what to do regarding the radio - I LOVE the look of the original! It would pain me to swap it out just for the sake of Bluetooth or what not.

Other interesting notes, it's got the Targa7 roof and comes with two roof panels! One clear and one solid - of course roof panel out is my fave so far. It has the original rims it came with plus a 5th clean one from the same year. It is an FB, and this is my favorite body of any RX-7 I think.

We kicked our Mazda3 out of the garage to keep the 7 as pristine as possible. I'm seriously over the moon!

Welcome to the board, Ashe. :)

Let me add to the list of admirers that your car has garnered. It is truly gorgeous. I would love to say that it reminds me of my very first car, but other than the color, they don't have much in common. Mine was a true basket-case. :)

I look forward to seeing you post questions and updates in the future.
