Diving in deep

So I have never owned a Rotary before.

Not for a lack of trying....

I got really close to owning an RX8 but the person stopped responding to text and new delivered the car so I kept my money and looked elsewhere.

Now, I'm selling my 99 Miata Death-kart when I get a message about a guy wanting to trade a non-starting 87 FC NA Gold coupe.

The car was originally from OH (Cincinnati area)
has 104k on the clock
and a rebuilt title... (No accident reported but it was bought as a salvaged title car once a few years ago so who knows. The body panels look original in the photos)

So, despite the rust (They claim there isn't any rust issue aside from the gas tank and the fenders) which, I'm sure is there because as a former GC8 Impreza owner RUST LOVES ME... I couldn't pass up a chance to finally own an FC.

The owner says it needs a starter and they replaced the rusted tank with a fuel cell.... but at least they didn't cut the body so I know where a parts car is to get an original-style tank and mounts.

I love the FC body (late 80's Japanese coupes are a favorite of mine).

I'm excited to learn more about the rotary engine I've been so interested in while restoring an old FC.

Thanks for reading and I'm glad to be here.

Looks like a great project car! I've always had a soft spot for that color combo. What are your plans for the car? Welcome to the forum!

Thanks.

Well, step one is to find out why it doesn't start. They replaced a rusted fuel tank with a fuel cell and they said they arent getting power to the external fuel pump. So I need to get it running as-is and from there I will be getting a fuel tank and original pump to redo the wiring and make it all factory.

I want to restore the car

After that, if the engine is fine, step 1.5 is fluids.
Step two, strip the interior and lift the car to look for rust. If the rust is just at the finders and the surface rust on chips, then I will prime those spots and plan on doing new carpet and possibly new plastics if need-be
Step three is to get the emissions stuff and OMP gone if possible (Still learning about this) as I will just premix. With this I will also do an eletric fan, hoses, etc.
Step four is the 5-hub conversion, Z23 brakes and coilovers (havent looked at brands but I like TEIN) as I imagine the old shocks are shot.
Finally step five -> paint I too like the gold. I think I will leave this one gold and save my white-on-white dreams for the eventual TII I will get.

I would like to get a street port eventually (probably whenever I decide it needs a clutch or whenever it needs a rebuild).

ALT. If the rust is really bad.... Race car! lol.

So they managed to dump the car off a trailer. Fender came off (they say it wasn't bolted on) and the front bumper came off. I'm already losing in the trade so after looking at the cost to repair... It's not worth me getting the car anyone. That's sad since I was about 12hr away from having it but I can't set myself up for failure. Anyways. I hope to find another and be back with info on that trade going well lol. Thanks for reading.

Well that sucks. Keep us updated on the next one you find! Maybe the ext one will be much cleaner.

Lame! It was so clean to start with.
