ChumpCar RX-Racer

Hi Steven from Denver here..

My Buddies and I recently built an RX-7 race car. 2 weeks ago we did ChumpCar at Pikes Peak international raceway (my first ever race). Our race car is a 1988 RX-7. The rotary was toasted, so we fitted a Miata 1.6. During the race, cars were dying left and right. Our happy little car was totally reliable. We were just hoping to finish. We surprised ourselves and managed to finish 6th.

ChumpCar was a total freakin' blast. I can die happy now. Tho, next time we do a true 24 hour race we'll get the big hella headlights for the car. We couldn't see a damed thing at night. Racing blind was...interesting. It was scary but, after 35 minutes I was kinda used to it. Weird the stuff you can get used to...

ChumpCar was big fun. People were nice. It was a great intro to racing. Highly recommended.

We're entering pretty late, but we're going to see if we can do 24 hours of lemons at high plains raceway next month. I'm liking our "MX-7" At the moment it understeers a lot more than we'd like, but it's still a blast to drive.

im taking my rx7 to sebring in september and its all rotary....if you rebuild the rotary before a chumpcar race it will finish and finish well.you should yank the miata motor and drop in a t2 motor lol

We really wanted to rebuild the rotary. Really we did. Unfortunately some parts of the engine where the apex seals make contact looked like Ruffles potato chips. We figured that we'd have needed 2 new housings, new apex seals, gaskets, etc. The rebuild dollars were going to be much more than we could spend.

One of our team mates had a 1.6 miata Engine from a wrecked car laying around with only 78,000 on the clock. He loaned the team his engine. Pretty freakin awesome of him. So that's how we ended up with a Miata powered mongrel. It was slower than it would have been with a rotary, but it got us there.

wish we had more real race tracks around here, we have an 1/8 mile oval and a short drag strip.
