914 guy

Hi everyone,
Joining here for reading and browsing at present. Want to be educated in case I ever jump on a rotary as I have looked at a Locost, an old Alpine and even a 914 running rotary. I like the first gen 7s. Almost bought a GS 20 years ago but have kept with my 914 addiction. I don't want to be viewed as a hoser, but I was also motivated to join to try and find a home for a nice set of JPC 13x5.5J rims. I know they are hard to find in the first gen pcd so thought this would be the place to find someone who'd appreciate them. I'm a Canuck living near Brantford ON, so I guess I am a hoser, eh?

Welcome, eh!

I was a 914 2.0 guy at University. Won an AutoX series there. Very fun car. 2000 lbs. and true longitudinal mid engine. All it needed was about 200 more hp to be really fun. = )

But in my opinion, the FD is a much more fun and refined car. Not to mention much faster. If you can find an affordable one, I strongly recommend it!

Fun Quotient

Black Europa, thanks for the welcome. Yes, an FD is a wonderfully refined machine, but I prefer a minimalist approach. I guess that's why I love the 914 - simple. Much more fun than my 944, 911SC, or 993. In fact, the 993 is for sale. Just not for me. Seems to me fun exists at a car's limits. When the limits are high, the only way to have fun on the street is to be constantly breaking the law. Seems to me a 1G 7 and 914 have limits that are easily accessible and ready to flex in a daily commute making them FUN! If I could legally drive a go kart, I would. In motorcycles, give me a little 250 2 stroke, not some heavy hyper bike. To each his/her own.

By refined I mostly mean the suspension. The FD has a great camber curve with the unequal length control arms. The 914 has trailing arms in back and struts in front. To keep the contact patch on the road took a stiff suspension and a lot of negative camber. Not fun for daily driving on our crappy roads.

My minimalist ride is a Lotus Europa Special. 1600 lbs and a great suspension. I upped the power to around 220 to the wheels for a great power to weight ratio. But it's still not as fast as my 400 hp FD on the track.

I agree about being careful on the streets. I only push the FD to the limit on the track. I enjoy passing much more expensive Porsches and BMWs there.

Regrets

Interestingly, one of my all time regrets is passing on a very original black S2 Gordini. I'd take your Europa any day - one of my all-time faves. :icon_tup:

The Gordinis are cool. I found an orange R17 Gordini in a local junkyard once. Very rare. I grabbed the 5 speed and used it in my Europa for a while. They came with Renault gearboxes so it wasn't too hard to fabricate the needed adaptors.
