3rd rx7, new to board

Hello, I am Dave. I had two gsl se rx7s at around 1990 and 1995. I did not have internet back then but was a member of rx7 club and loved the Tshirt I no longer have. I have been a member of this board since maybe August, and utilized the board to help me decide which 7 to buy, whnether a gsl se or a gsl.

My very first 7 was stolen and was used to run heroine between Mexico and the U.S. A few years after that I picked up a gsl se and the seals failed at about 144,000 miles. Didn't have the funds to repair it so got rid of it. In the interim I have been re-building IHC 4x4s and Jeep CJ5s.

After telling my 9 year old son about the virtues of a rotary, he convinced me to sell one of my Scouts and I bought a 1983 gsl on ebay for $1625. Ebay's Vehicle Purchase Protection program re-imbursed me $1625 because the transmission was about to fail (undisclosed damage over $1000). I paid a pro $700 to replace the clutch. I am now having the tranny rebuilt for $800 or less. So, I now have a nice 1983 gsl with SK carb, rebuilt tranny and new clutch (and slave) for $1500. It I understand that the SK is a weber45 DCOE sidedraft clone. I got $800 for the Scout so the net effect was to have spent $700 on the Mazda. The only rust is on the removable roof panel, the car has been re-painted but not bad.

My son and I take the 7 out and just drive all over, experience the G forces and listen to the rotary engine sing. I have plans to replace the engine when it crashes (166,000 miles now) and beef up the suspension, performance tires and new seats. New paint somewhere down the road, though it isnt' a necessity. I like the side-draft carb, it is very smooth and responsive. I purchased an air cleaner for it and have not noticed a decrease in performance.
