will steering wheel size make a difference
 

i currently have a momo millinium (sp chk) steering wheel, but i am looking to change it into a sparco d shaped steering wheel which is smaller by 50-75mm. will this make a difference in driving (safety wise)? the reason i am doing this is simply because i need the leg room, especially when getting out of the car.

What do you mean by "safety wise"? If you already have an aftermarket steering wheel, giving up the standard wheel with the airbag, then all bets are off. ;)

I dont know about the D shaped but a friend of mine had a small steering wheel and I always loved to drive his car cuz of the way the steering was.

by safety menaing does it affect being able to turn quick enough or something.

by the way if anyone wants this steering wheel(momo millinium) going to sell it for about 200-225 including shipping withh all hardware, except hub adapter.

I have a MOMO race thats 30mm I think or 35mm VERY NICE, tons of room and easy to use..

It will actually make steering response better and more responsive. If you you draw two circles, a big circle representing your bigger steering wheel, and a smaller one inside of it representing your new smaller wheel, then draw two lines at ninty degree angles from the center of the two circles exiting the wheels, you will notice that it takes less distance to reach one line to the other from the smaller circle than the bigger circle. Hence this improves less time for you to turn your wheel, which means faster turning of your wheels. The down side is that this smaller circle creates a smaller leverage for you and makes it harder for you to turn. But that is ok since we all have the luxury of power steering. However, if the wheel kicks back on you for some reason, that will translate into your hands and arms more and possibly causing injury if significant enough.

After further examination of both wheels, I've noticed that your new wheel is designed like an F1 or CART wheel and is geared more for racing. In racing, it is rare to encounter corner where you must cross your arms over to complete the turn. Hence the wheel is flat on top and bottom, because race car drivers will never contact these areas to turn the wheel. As for street driving, you should have no problems turning at slow speeds. However, at high speeds you may have a problem turning while trying to cross your arms and contacting these flat areas. Also, you may have a problem when you exit the turn while the wheel is automatically spinning back. Your hands may have problems following the contours of the wheel. Did you ever consider consider the TOP POWER steering wheel made MOMO? It is smaller in diameter and is still round. However, the Sparco gives you the distinct and rare race car look. Seriously, though you could rig a cardboard template to see how much extra legroom you'll get with a smaller diameter and/or D-shape wheel. It's not too hard to remove the stock wheel.

just make sure you can see the speedo and tach properly. sometimes a smaller steering wheel blocks your view.

my MOMO was like $200 I think.. Im not totally sure on that one, its been a while..

What size Millenium do you have? They are available in 350mm and 320mm. I have the 320mm and find it perfectly sized.

Also, here in Oz there are laws governing the size of the steering wheel. You might want to make sure you're not breaking any local laws that might void your insurance.

s2-13bt i have the 350 and busar it does block the turn signals for me.

r.a.d. thanx for the info, but don't you generally hold on to the steering wheel if you are making sharp turns. i thought of everything you said and i believe this steering wheel will work in real world situations.

With the 320mm I can see the tach and speedo fine, but I can't see the turn signals flashing away (but who cares).

i cant see a damn thing but i dont have an adjustable steering column but its super sweet im in love with it

gordon you like the suede steering wheels? my hand gets kind of clamy (especially when i drive fast).
