wide front fenders & stock rear
 

Hey everyone, when i purchased my car it came with 18" rims up front. Someone had attempted to roll the fenders, and did a poor job, you can see where the rubber has actually caught the lip before, and the lip is now all rusty.

This project is probably for next winter, as i want to enjoy driving it this summer and not have it under the knife. But I want to keep my eye out for good deals in the mean time.

My question is, if I find a good deal on wide front fenders, does it look ok without adding flares to the back? I may just get mine fixed, but I would guess it'd cost like $400. So if I found good used aftermarket fenders for cheap, I could just get them painted and be ready to roll.

Please don't flame haha, i just want to see if its been done, what it looks like, and theres a good chance i may just keep it stock.

Doubt it. You can get stock fenders very inexpensively. If the problem is only on the inside of the fenders, get some roll-on / brush-on undercoat paint, clean up the rust and seal it with the paint. If it is visible, then you have more expensive work ahead of you where you may need some professional painting.

The lip is all bent and the rust is visible. It's definitely in need of a professional job. I'd love to go with the shine above, but the only reason I was looking into this is because once in a while I see used wide front fenders in the FS section for pretty cheap.

But I don't want to go through all the trouble of matching it with rear fender flares. Then I'd need wider rims in the back to make it look good. And thats much more than I'm willing to spend.

I do want to update the front bumper at some point, but I'm not sure if any wider aftermarket front fenders fit a front end that is a stock replacement (i.e. non widebody)

I've seen FEED wide front fenders with stock rears...it looks fine to me.

I have Burnout wide front fenders from Ken at Shine Auto. When I installed them they look funny with the stock rear so I got the Burnout rear fenders too. Search my name and you can see some pics of my car with just the fronts on.

Does anyone know if this will have negative effect on the handling of the car? Wide front fenders will require either wide wheels or spacers to fill the gap which will increase the front track. Is it going to increase oversteer?

If there are no cons, I might seriously consider this set-up on my car as it'll be totally reversible since no rear fender molding involved.

I run wide front fenders and stock rear fenders and it looks fine. Just get some low offset wheels nice and flush and itll look good and even. I run 18x9.5 +15 in the front and 18x10.5 +25 in the rear and I have no handling issues.

I got them on a few weeks ago, so much better than the stock wheels, especially up front.

They're stretched, 225s up front and 255s in the rear but there's plenty of space for 275s or any other size you'd want. I have the rear fenders cut also, I forgot that.

Front: When you widen the track (push the wheels out further), you'll experience more bump steer. Doing so will also increase the leverage against the springs, effectively making the front "softer." Even if you don't necessarily feel the front end being softer, you should notice the front of the car will sit lower when you push the wheels out.

Rear: Extending the track will cause the diff to "tighten up" more easily. This would be most noticeable when the rear starts to skip when making sharp turns i.e. making a turn at an intersection. It will also effectively "soften" the springs.

On an FD, you'll start noticing these effects if you decide to push the wheels out 50mm or more... which I don't recommend. The car will handle more poorly and really be less fun to drive.

When I was driving on 18x9 +18 front wheels, I actually noticed an unmistakable increase in bump steer.

When I was running 18 x 10 +22 rears, I also noticed skipping during (intersection) tight turns, not a big deal, but I'm sure my diff didn't like it.

Thanks Josh. I don't know why a reputable company like Feed does it though, since they have the option to fit a rear fender if they wish.

Eitherway, I'm keeping it stock body and if I ever go widebody I'll do rear fenders as well.
