Voodoo knob or Razo knob?
I'm going to eventually get a new shift knob (I like my stock one ok but I want something lower, and I want a ball shape since I shift with my hand on top, not like a pistol grip) and I decided on either a spun aluminum Voodoo knob or the black 340-gram Razo ball knob.
I know the Voodoo knob is properly threaded and that the Razo knob is just a threaded insert, but even that's gotta be better than the way Momo knobs go on, right? Also, the Voodoo knob (since all they sell is Magnum knobs) is 2 inches wide, which sounds a little freakishly big, but does anyone have any reference pictures as to just how big it actually is? And isn't it much, much lighter than the stock knob? The Razo is very heavy but I think it's still not as heavy as the stock knob (which is about a pound IIRC). So which one would you guys pick given the following pros/cons: Voodoo: Machined threads Maybe too big? And too light? No markings (this is a good thing) Razo: Heavy-weight But uses an insert to install (guess I could just Has brand markings but they're not ricey or anything Yes I know metal knobs get freakishly hot/cold when not covered up but I usually have gloves in my car anyway so it's not that much of a problem. I experienced this first-hand in Japan with a carbon-fiber shift knob that was just about hot enough to fry an egg, or at least burn the hell out of anyone driving it with bare hands (although it went away after I put a rag over it for a while). They also both cost about the same (30 bucks). I would consider the leather Razo ball but it's not as heavy, and I'm not really in the mood for something that looks like a black baseball (plus the smooth black looks cooler anyway). |
you can always make the razo knob threaded
|
Yes, but that takes time/effort/money.
And I think I'd rather have a silver knob... but not one that's too light. |
Actually does anyone know exactly what the S5 shift knob weighs? I don't have a scale suitable to weight it.
|
Does weight really matter? The shift knob is threaded onto the lever so you shouldn't be able to notice a difference in the weight when shifting anyways; you'll only notice it when holding it in your hand.
|
It changes the inertia... and more importantly, light-weight shift knobs tend to cause the shifter to rattle.
Apparently the Voodoo knobs only weight 15 or so grams less than the stock Miata knob (which apparently weighs about 190 grams), so I guess that's good enough... |
I say go with the Voodoo. I hate any wobble or shifting with my shift knobs. The one piece threaded metal has the best solid feel I've ever had in a shift knob. In fact i redrilled and tapped my old voodoo knob when I sold my car so I could use it on my new car!

I have a voodoo, and it is by far my favorite. The size is perfect, and it sits about .5 -.75 lower than the stock. When I went from the stock to the B&M shifter it is actually a little too low. I am going to have to see if I can make a spacer to raise it up a little bit.

For the record the stock S5 GTU knob weighs 352 grams.
|
i have the heaviest weight razo, and the plastic insert is completely not an issue; the whole thing is oustanding
|
they get scorching hot during the summer though, there painted aluminum i'm pretty sure
|
I have a razo knob in the FD, prob the best knob i bought (LOL) by far.
And i have gone through about 6 knobs. |
