subs or mid or full range

Hey guys, I have boston rally 6/9s mounted in the storage compartments behind the seats. In the front I have boston acoustic pro series 6.5s(6in drivers with seperate tweeters). The problem is the rears are overpowering the fronts in every respect. In particular, it sounds like 90% of my high mid/mid/low is coming from the back, leaving only the extreme highs to the front. Obviously this is not idea staging! Anyway I've played around with the gains on the amp but am still not happy with it. The stereo shop has offered my a couple suggestions 1-cut the tweeter off the 6/9s(at 300 a pair nfw!), 2 replace them with mid range drivers(like what is up front but w/o the tweeter) 3 replace them with subs. The 6/9s are being replaced under warranty and I can accept store credit instead, so switching to something different is a viable option. What do you guys suggest? I am worried if I go with subs, I'll have a bipolar system(all high and low no mid range), but I'm also concerned that if I go with mid range speakers I'll want more bass and possibly run into the same rearward biased staging problem. I hate to even think about going with mid range drivers and reinstalling the bose sub, but I will consider it. I don't want boom, but like tight bass:)

I hope someone has a better grasp on this than I do

Is your 4 channel amp running only your mids and highs. Do you have a passive xover network on your front components? If your 4 channel amp is running only your mids and highs (I am assuming you have no sub installed currently) is the amp running 4 ohm stereo into all 4 channels? I can help you just be patient.

I believe the 4 channel is running at 4ohms not 2, but this is more or less out of my ass. I'll check on that when I get back to boston monday(in NY for the weekend). 2 channels run the front drivers and tweeters(via the crossovers that came with them) and the other two run the rears.

What kind of an amp do you have and does it have built in electronic crossovers?

A few suggestions.

Get an electronic 8 channel (4 amp) crossover. Get a front mount EQ. Get amps with an adjustable bass boost. Get a Panasonic head unit with HDBass and S-HDBass. Their radios are great for rock, heavy metal, and alternative - gives it a more live / energetic sound (vs the lifeless sound of most systems).

Running higher voltage out the preamp (4 - 5 volts) also helps.
