Series 8 Stereo Wiring
Good afternoon all
I know the subject of radio/stereo wiring has probably been done to death, but a lot of the info i have searched doesn't quite cover my car, and i presume as its a 2000 Series 8. Any thoughts or pointers are greatly appreciated.

I managed to trace the cable. I believe it must be for a Bose system, and potentially the Series 8 door loom covers both wiring possibilities. Where the loom meets the door connector, the internal loom does not pick up the connection, so the internal looms must be more specific. As you'd expect.
The end. |

Not exactly. I'm just waking up, so please forgive my lack of tact in saying this but you completely misdiagnosed the problem. I just checked the 12/98 and 9/00 Wiring Diagrams and you got it backwards. This is indeed the Type 2 system (Bose), but Blue and Green here are the speaker signals. Black/Orange and Black/Red are power and ground respectively for the amp that is packaged with the speaker (kinda like the FC's rear speakers). Black/Red is straight from the Radio Relay, while Black/Orange goes to Ground Point #4 (either end of the dashboard).
If you have the wiring diagrams for the car, can you share? |
And based on having the diagrams, can you tell me how the center speaker is wired and if there is actually a magic amp somewhere in the 2000 cars?

Well luckily there was no problem to diagnose, i was simply trying to work out what the cables were. Now i know. I also know that they dont go anywhere after the door connector, however some don't even have them.

I'm currently in the middle of extracting all of the text to give the six wiring diagram books a proper translation. Yes, there is a Center Speaker Amp. Based on how the diagram looks, it takes both left and right speaker signals from the doors, combines them together and then puts it out to the Center Speaker. The amp is underneath the double din area, opposite of the handbrake lever. Looks about even with the top of the center console. 14 pin connector, same style as the stock radio connectors. |

Kinda surprising you had any sound coming out of the affected door speaker since both signal lines were disconnected. To use regular speakers, just hook them up to the Green and Blue wires, or Red and White for the JDM driver's side door.

I have had the centre console out and reinstalled a new double DIN dash cage but still cant find a centre amp! Arrghgh. :D |
If the amp is not under the center console, then it should be in the area between the glove box and the stereo head unit. To access it, you need to remove the glove box and the plastic cover with a clip that attaches to the wall towards the head unit.

Thanks for coming back again. The speakers did work, i spliced them into the green and blue. That's all fine. I have new component speakers and I was literally just trying to work out if they were Bose cables for a tweeter, or if i could find the other end to take the tweeter out the door up onto the dash. Now i know i cant. I looked at routing through the door connector, but gave up on that as it looks tight and horrible LOL

Arrghgh. :D 9/00 and later ones don't have the center speaker amp, they just tapped the center speaker into one wire on both front speakers. Blue from the Left and Red from the Right. For the 12/98 (Version 5), it's Purple/Pink and Yellow/Green at the center speaker. I'm pretty sure you have the 12/98 setup since you have 4-pin front speaker connectors, but at least now everyone can tell for certain with a quick look at the center speaker's wire colors. |
This is brilliant, thanks guys!
The car is April 2000, so the 12/98 I presume. All the speaker specs on here claim it should be 4ohms, but it has 6ohms written on it so presumed something must have changed. All I wanted to do was remove potential interference from an old center amp, but hopefully unplugging it will remove it from the system. I'll check the cable colours later. Thanks again! |

EDIT: The 12/95 maintenance supplement says that Bose systems have an 8 ohm center speaker, not a 16 ohm one like the non-Bose systems. Still shouldn't be too hard to find a suitable replacement if needed. Just gotta match the depth |

Depending on if it's Version 5 or 6, you might not have a center speaker amp. I just got the text extracted from it a few days ago and Series 8 got weird in this area. 12/98 eliminated the non-bose system, then they flipped backwards for 9/2000 and reintroduced the base model system and killed off the Bose system.

So i checked this weekend and the center speaker cable is red and blue, so from your wiring details, it seems i have a 9/00 setup. Looks like they were building them how they liked in the last few years! :D

Sounds like things were a little squirrelly at the time, but it does highlight the need for the FD Wiring Bible that I'm working on. Straight answers in plain English are worth their weight in gold.

I don't suppose you can provide the diagrams for the cluster lights and cluster warnings etc can you? Or do you have a link to the original JDM diagrams your translating?
