Seats

OK guys here's the question, I have a 86 GXL with the maroon/red interior with the leather seats. The seats are in horrible shape (faded, several cracks, and a few tears) I was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere I can get a good set of seat covers? I want to get the seats redone but don't have the $$ for it right now. Could Iget a decent set of covers at local auto parts stores (Pepboys, Advanced)? I want a set that is two tone in color ( black and red).

Thanks

With the way rx7 seats are built, most seat covers won't hold up long. Go junkyard hopping and find another pair of seats.

Depends on your car model and what seat you get. Some does work with stock bracket. But only bottom mount will work.

I had 3 seats and the package tray done on an old Firebird I restored for about $200. If you do a lot of the work yourself, it is pretty cheap. Take the seats out, and pull the covers off. That will save you a ton, and is easy.

Take the covers to an automotive/boat upholstery shop. Look in the local phone book.

I just had them put in inserts, which are the center sections of the seat covers. The bolsters, sides, and backs were still in good shape. So all the shop had to do was sew in panels about 1 - 1.5' wide in the middle of the seat.

It wouldn't cost any extra to get a different color or a different texture sewn in. In fact, you may not be able to match the color anyway. You could get them to sew red into your black seats.

The old Firebird (a '69, after which they all went down hill) had sort of pearl white seat covers (think the pearl white on the Mazda 929). No way to match that, but I got a dark blue pearl color fabric sewn in. Matched the white paint job w/ dark blue stripes.

Cheers,

Steve

Do you still have the bird? I agree with you about going downhill after '69. Do you take it to any shows? Americruise or anything like that?

I have a '67 convertible. Bought it in '71 when I was in High School. For the past few years it has been an ongoing resto project. Just about done - I'm putting the interior back in now. After that, only a new top to finish it.
