rear speaker install- FC daily driver

Hey everybody!

I decided to make this thread to record my latest FC sound system adventure.

Prior to this latest rear speaker install, I had an RF Punch 12" sub-woofer in a home built 3/4" MDF box made to RF specifications. It produced tons of bass inside the car, but took up almost all my cargo space. For rear mids and highs, I had a pair of MTX Monitor 6 bookshelf speakers. They sounded okay, but took up all the space that was left behind the sub box. So needless to say, no cargo space whatsoever, and quite a bit of weight to lug around every day.

So I began to think of clever ways to install some rear speakers to get rid of all that weight, and to get all my cargo space back. I was totally prepared to lose all my sub-bass response by getting rid of the 12" sub-woofer. I'm very tired of seeing it in the back of the car- I guess all that bass just isn't worth it to me anymore.

So here's what I did:

Pyle Blue Label 6x9" behind each seat for mids and highs...

And a pair of 8" woofers in the speaker towers for a little extra "thump"

And just for kicks, here's the head unit and the MP3 player set up.

So I've tested the whole thing, and I was right. Not nearly as much sub-bass, but still a great sound. I want to call the kind of bass that comes from these speakers sort of a "tight" bass, somewhere in the low/mid range. Something subs don't really provide, and something I've not really heard in my car before.

My findings with this set up are that the rear speaker towers are definitely for mid/high ranges, not bass. But I did find that there is good bass response from the 6x9" speakers right behind the seats, this might be a good place for some small bass speakers like a pair of 6" subs, or 6x9 subs. (Yes, they make subs in those sizes.)

Awesome install, I like the way you went around doing it all. I might throw up pics of the way I ran some of my cables for the center console, for your interest.

Sure, post 'em if you got 'em! I'm always interested in seeing other peoples set ups.

And by the way: That factory equalizer is wired into the RCA "pre-out" cables that go to my amp, so if I ever decide to run full range speakers off the aftermarket amp, I can use the equalizer to adjust the sound. I was amazed at how easy it was to "hack".

So just a tip everybody- If you see a factory EQ laying around somewhere, it can be tailored to an aftermarket amp, so don't toss it. See the FSM for a wiring diagram.

I thought the largest speaker size you could fit back there was just a regular 6 inch? How did you get 8 inch subs in there? I'm so considering doing this because I have 2 spare 8" subs I have nothing to do with lol.

Take the plastic buckets and the speaker mounting plates out of the towers. The hole left behind should be the perfect size to fit in some 8" speakers with little to no modification. I recommend putting some batting/insulation under the speakers. It really helps eliminate rattles and improve the bass response slightly.

Has anyone fit 6X9's below the rear seats on a 2+2 before?

The seat cushion actually sits on the cross frame on the floor,so you can't put anything there Marshall.

Bummer! Thanks for the tip though.
