Quick & Easy Fix for FD3S Map Pocket Door

Alright I did this awhile back but I never got around to taking photos...

I've seen too many FDs kicking around with no map pocket. Obviously this was a design fail on Mazda's part.

I'm sure others have also done this, but I figured out a simple fix. All you need is a drill with about a 1/8" bit and a short screw (I used one from my computer case, it's about 3/8" in length).

The reason why the doors won't stay on is because the pin falls out on the front side. Since I couldn't find a replacement pin, I just drilled a hole all the way through where the pin would sit, then screwed the computer screw through.

Make sure you only screw through about half way, then put the cover in place before you tighten the screw the rest of the way through. The map pocket now opens and closes like it's supposed to, and I never open my door to find it laying in my seat.

Drill all the way through here:

Half screw in the screw like this:

Put the door in place:

Then screw it all the way through:

Sorry for the camera phone pics and dirty interior...but you get the idea.

booyahh simple fix... i tried bondo but i got lazy... i wanna try the "plast-aid" stuff.. its suppose to be like "welding plastic" theres a thread someone did using it to repair all the screw points for the dash... looks interesting..

yeah as you guys can probably tell from the underside of my map pocket door, i cracked mine into 3 pieces by sitting on it and had to plastic-weld it back together (actually just used super glue), then sanded/painted it...

Does that still leave that stepped opening process the original had? I didn't know this but I just got a minty map pocket and it doesn't just flop open and close like the original.

Make sure to adjust the door lip clamping spring while you are in there. Mazda made it really high tension from the factory for how cheesy the actual door lid is. I lowered mine to the point where it still clamps shut, but with a light force not the hard <THUNK> that mazda made them. This will put less stress on the 15+yr old plastic as well.
