Questions regarding the 1993 base stock stereo.

I'm in the process of upgrading my base 1993's stock stereo system (no Bose). I've already done the head unit and cd changer with Sony units (highly recommend the CDX747X absolutely no skipping). I'll be adding an 8 inch powered bazooka in the trunk, but I have some questions regarding speaker replacement.

Right now, I've got the Sony head unit plugging in to the stock RX-7 wiring harness, so that I'm using the stock speakers and anything that may be along the way. I've read somewhere that even the base unit had some type of in-line amplifier driving the speakers. Is this correct? My Sony makes some power (I believe 19 watts RMS), does this get "cancelled out" or "added to" the in-line amp? Also can I plug new speakers into the existing speaker wiring? Or do I have to start looking into rewiring the system completely? And what about the center channel speaker. Do I need it? Can I remove it?

Thanks

I have an R1 which for this comparison is the same because we don't have the BOSE setup. There is not an inline amp or anything like that in the non-BOSE system. If there was, you would have already messed that piece up by driving with an aftermarket deck. [note: If you have an aftermarket deck, the stock speaker is no longer connected, but it is not that useful anyway.] The door can handle a 6.5" speaker up to 2.5" depth. The rear is like a 5X7 and I don't know the depth. I will make a plate soon to convert to a 5.25" opening, so I'll know the depth then.

You can wire to the existing wiring for you aftermarket speakers. You can remove the center channel speaker.

Did you mean the center channel speaker?

Do people like Infinity Reference coaxial speakers? I'm thinking 5 and 1/4 in the front and 5x7 in the back...

I don't know about the inline amp. But, I replaced the base speakers with Rockford Fosgate rears and Clarion fronts. Aftermarket speakers do work fine. I left the center unchanged since it doesn't make that much difference.

Check clearence on all speakers. On the fronts, larger size (5.25" I think) can be used. However, the larger magnet size on some won't allow fitment. Also, the aftermarket speakers have a tendency to 'bump' into the grille when playing hard.

Just sharing my experience. Don't know if I helped much though.

Yes I did -- I sometimes lapse into another world while writing. No I really don't like Infinity. I prefer Boston Acoustics and MB Quartz for coaxial speakers. But then again, I haven't used coaxial speakers since '97. Also look at the JBL speakers if you are wanting a cost effective speaker -- they are nice too.

I have an R1 and i just did my stereo. I went wtih the Sony head unit.. not sure of the model.. it was the XPLOD that has the high pass filter and wireless remote. I put MB Quarts in my doors, they sound really really clean and a Collins WaterMark bass tube in the rear hatch. The bass tube has a built in amplifier and cross over and it sounds bad ass.

i am by no means an audiophile and i wasn't looking for the best and i dont do any bass competitions either, so i just wanted something that i could crank up and sound crystal clear. i still have to get 1 more pair of MB Q's for my rear speaker location, and i am going to put a PPI 4 channel amp to give it a little boost.

the sony head unit i'm not too pleased with, it skips here and there, (but we all know how the R1's ride as well) so i'm not sure if any other CD Player would be better or not. i'm sure a clarion or alpine for the same price probably would be better but the Sony just had the perfect color's to match my dash https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/smile.gif and its' GOTTA look nice https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/smile.gif
