Question about installing side skirts
 

I just recently bought a gtc replica kit from racer wheel and it just showed up at my place about two weeks ago. I was really impressed at the quality of the kit. I know some people are going to flame me for buying a replica or from racer wheel but it only cost me 600 bucks for the skirts and front bumper. So flame on.

But anyway i read up on these replica kits from racer wheel and people said that the fitment kinda sucks and you will end up spending a lot of money at a body shop trying to get it fitted. But my dad and myself are the ones doing the body work and one of my dads friends who restores old trucks is going to spray it for me. So we are doing the fitment and prepping the car for paint so im not too worried about having to do some modifications.

So anyway i got some pics of the kit and some of the fitments, but my real question is how do you secure the side skirts in the door jams? Its where the skirt cover and overlap the door jam. Its too thin to get a screw in them and be able to counter sink it without the screw grinding on the door. So is there some kind of adhesive that people use or do they use 3M tape there? Any kind of help would be appreciated. Thanks Josh

After a couple of hours of trimming and fitment here it is on the car.

Here is the drivers side head light cover. I still need to do a little tweaking on it.

Here is the passenger side. You can see where the bumper doesn't come all the way around the the cover. I might have to build up some fiberglass on the corner.

Also on the bumper below both of the covers there is kind of a low spot so the bumper doesnt flow really great with the head light covers.

Here is where i had to do a little cutting and mods to get to to mount up to the engine bay. It originally had fiberglass tabs that mated up to the but they were causing pressure on the bumper that wouldnt allow it to sit correctly.

Here is my racing beat spoiler that i bought off a member. Its not bolted down yet that is why it looks like its setting up so high instead of being flush on the deck.

So let me know what you think. And like i said earlier if anyone has experience installing the side skirts let me know how to secure them in the door jam. Thanks Josh

I hope you didn't fill in the holes for the screws that secures the center portion of the spoiler. The center section will over time become loose and will require you to retighten them. I have the same spoiler.

Oh and for securing the side skirts use self tapping screws. You can get them with a low profile head. I used those and no problems with them hitting the bottom of the door. I would use 3 screws on each side skirt.

Thanks for the info. My spoiler only has four holes on each end. Three of them on each end require a bolt coming up from the deck lid and the other has two studs on them. So i have a total of eight holes on my deck lid. Which ones are you talking about?

And if you find time could you also send me some pics of your cars body kit. Im just curious how it looks compared to mine. Thanks

Yeah the I'm not talking about the mounting screws for the actually spoiler to the deck lid. The screws I'm talking about are the ones that mount the center part of the spoiler to the main portion of the spoiler. Mine has two hex screws that secure the cover on each side, once removed the mounting screw for the center portion are exposed. But go to this site to view some pics of my FD those pics are about a year old. The car has changed quite a bit since then. Mainly interior and engine work. I went to that site and your car is just awesome. I just really like the gtc kit. Which rims are those? Are they volk gtc's? Anyway thanks for the info and way to go on your car.

I forgot to ask one thing. On that spot on the front bumper, where it curves around from the headlight cover to the hood. Is there any way i can build that up to make it look any better? Here are the pics that im talking about.

Thanks for the compliments. But those pics are pretty old already. The new pics should be updated pretty soon. Interior looks even better and well the engine is looking pretty spicy..!! Oh and the front bumper is Mazda Speed GTC and the side skirts are Knight Sports, and rear pieces are Feels. Carbon fiber hood is knight sport. And yes the wheels are Volk GT-C 19". About building up the area around the lights I had to build it up with some bondo before painting. My front bumper used to be molded on to the fenders before but I decided to unmold it because of the future HP potential from the new motor. I didn't want it to crack in the future from chassis flex and vibration. Just make sure the body shop knows what they are doing, if they do then the bondo work should last for at least 10 years or more if taken care of. The prep work is gonna make the difference. Will the bondo adhere to the fiberglass pretty good? I know i have to roughen it up to get it to hold but is that what i should use instead of building it up with more fiberglass? Thanks Josh

Josh you can also use fiberglass if you want, does require more work but will also come out nice. Either way you won't be able to avoid adding some bondo to the area that you work on. So that you can sand and smooth out that area. But if you decide to use just bondo make sure you rough up the are with some 40 grit and clean it off really good before adding the bondo. If you don't the bondo won't stick as well and will crack soon after.
