projector lamps

i am planning on creating a set of headlights for my fd. i would like to use high and low beam projectors. however the one question i can not find an answer to is, weather projectors create a different pattern or is it all in the bulb? are fog lights, low beam, and high beam projectors all different patterns or the same patterns with different bulbs?

if any clarification is needed just ask

things like this are what have led to my confusion on the subject. it says "You will get Hi-low beam from the light switch." i assumed that there would be a difference in high/low pattern which a switch could not change.

I am not completely positive, some bulbs are capable of producing high/low beam, example is H4 bulb. The H4 bulb has two different filaments, one for low beam and one for high beam. I also think that the H4 bulb relies a lot on the design of the lamp to disperse light correctly. Projector lamps provide a low beam by putting a shield in front of the light bulb. When you select the high beams, the shield moves out of the way, allowing more light to be reflected. This is the way I understand these systems to work, I am sure that if you did search in google you could find tons of stuff out there. You also might want to search the forum, I think that a few other people have tried to do similar things.

for anyone curious this is refering to a bi-xenon style setup where a metal shield moves up and down inside the assembly

I just purchased bi-xenon projectors off of ebay that look like they will fit. Search for E55 projectors, there are tons of them for sale, and lots of them include the bi-xenon solenoid which activates whatever it is that creates the high and low beams. Then you just use whatever bulbs the stock E55 uses, Nissan Maxima also had these same projectors for a while, i believe they are D2S projectors by Hella.

And if you are using these with HID, make sure you get Balasts that are digital, this way you don't need separate ignitors. these usually go on the back of the bulbs and take up another 1/2 inch or so, and that is room that we don't have to spare.
