Police scanners...anyone use them?

Hi guys, my uncle has an old Uniden BearCatcher scanner in his supra and its so cool, it scans a 1 mile radius and when it picks up a police/highway frequency, it displays a WARNING signal/light and you can hear whatever they are saying. So do any of you guys have one in your rex? I was thinking, hopefully it will fit, take out my stock EQ and fitting one right in there? Man that would be awsome...let me hear your thoughts.

TheTwinTurboRX-7 02-02-03 04:23 AM

If you have any kind of nice stereo system it will distort your radio and sound with the frequencies recieved with the scanner.

Thats only if both are turned on at the same time?

TheTwinTurboRX-7 02-02-03 04:49 AM

I think so, though not sure, but then if you are going down the highway one a long trip you would be wanting to run both eh?

djmickyg 02-02-03 05:42 AM

a friends got a hand held scanner. its alot of fun. can pick up the ambulance also. and if u got a new one u can get the air trafic controllers too..

They are illegal to have "in your vehicle" in some states. Make sure to check your local laws so you'll know if you need to hide it if you get pulled over.

xxxHondaGuyxxx 02-02-03 02:58 PM

Illegal?

You could always just swallow it when the cop pulls you over.

Vubonic 02-02-03 03:45 PM

Init...THATS EXACTLY THE ONE I BEEN SEARCHING FOR! Thank you so much, how did you know??? The model number really helped out, its about $150-$200 tho, for a 1994 model? :wtf: But ims till get it:) I will work on my console pictures once I have everythign ready....keep posted!!!

SeXyReX7 02-02-03 11:29 PM

i never really wanted one. if i were to ever get one, i'd feel like i was "invincible" thus making me a speed freak while going to the supermarket yaknow? cops don't just use radars to catch you... i've had two speeding tickets; both times, the cop "paced" me. turn off the headlights?! WTF?? if you get one, try not to think you're invincible, that's all.. plus the safety of ppl around you.

Vubonic 02-03-03 02:42 AM

The nice thing about this specific scanner is it does NOT detect the radar but the police radio frequencies and alerts you when one is within the area. Of course you do not become the "speed bandit" with this device, it all depends on the individual.

Uhhhh, I have a nice system and carry my handheld scanner with me on trips all the time. It does nothing to the radio.

I program my scanner with all the local police, DPS and sheriff frequencies along my route and if I need to make good time I just turn the sucker on.

My primary reason for purchasing the scanner was to take to races with me and listen to the drivers and crews, it's much more interesting when the "#@&$*!!" are not edited out by the tv :D

what if theyre not talking when you are in the area? the radio is silent sometimes

Yeah, how often do they talk on those things when they're in a donut shop?

Vubonic 02-04-03 03:07 PM

It picks up the signal from the dispatcher, so if the police isn't talking, you can still pick up the dispatcher signal from the police car.

So there is a "dispatcher signal " emitted from the police radio when a message is received by the police radio???

BigRed 02-04-03 04:47 PM

why would it matter? your radio would cover a 10 mile radius and you would hear chatter, an officer would rarely give his location over the radio unless A) they were 10-19 (back in station) or B) in the middle of a call where they wouldn't pull you over anways. And on top of that that's only 1 officer, you wouldn't know how many are on shift at that time.

have fun wasting your money.

BigRed 02-04-03 04:50 PM

no, dispacters work on the same radio frequency as all the officers, it just that because they are dispaching, they're on the radio more often than an individual officer, so there's more of a chance that you'd pick up their band while a dispatcher was on.

It would matter, when the officer responds to the dispatch, the scanner picks it up. Not only does it pick up police frequencies, but it picks up medical, air traffic, etc, depending on which mode you want.

AwW! I want one but i doubt it there legal here in the bay area. Vuboniv is legal at your location?
