Once again, fiberglassing in my FD

Alright, so most of you know that my components didn't fit so I made fiberglass door pods for my FD. (Do a search for my name if you want to see them)

So I bought a 10W7 for my FD and just did a temp setup to see how it sounds. I then decided I was going to sell it, but then I went ahead and am going to go on with the work to make the W7 fit and make a nice custom install.

I took out the spare tire and carpet and cut out a false floor. My amps are going to be running along the bottom and there will be a cover that will go over them so it looks flush and will hide all wires.

For the box, right now I have the frame and the baffle ready and tomorrow I'm going to start fiberglassing. The sub is going to be angled towards the hatch window and fiberglassed and then a piece that will go over it so basically you'll only see the fiberglass.

It's hard to describe but hopefully you guys will get the picture.

That was the temporary setup just to see how the sub sounds

Just a basic setup right now. As you can see, amps along the bottom, the base of the box there, and then crossovers to the side. I saw Sonix7 thread and I think both of us are going to have pretty much identicle installs.

I'm excited to see how both of our projects turn out. Stay tuned!

Well, it seems like everyone is posting over on Sonix7's post so I need to update you guys lol.

Anyways, the enclosures coming together quite well. I got the shape of the box set and have resined it and now just waiting for it to cure. I won't have time to work on it this weekend, but I will hopefully start to fiberglass sometime this coming week.

After the enclosure is done, I'll finish up by doing the amp rack and then a cover for everything so nothing will be seen.

The only thing you will see is just the fiberglass part of the enclosure (won't see the wood part) and the top of the amps flush. Atleast that's the idea in my head right now, hopefully I can make it all happen.

The sub fits great with the hatch closed, just comes up a little above the strut bar and not even close to the hatch window but firing towards it, exactly what I wanted. I'm excited, but still a lot of work to do, enjoy the pictures!

Sorry for quality, it was taken by my phone.

Update

Fiberglassed 5-6 lays on and the box is pretty strong but have a problem. The first layer of fiberglass near the bottom didn't contact onto the resin so the 5-6 layers built onto nothing so I have to refiberglass that from either the inside or I am going to sand those spots down and refiberglass on the outside there. I need to sand down with 80grit and then rebondo. Going to work on it some more today.

Theres the picture of the problem. Luckily, the resin attatched to the wood so I didn't have a true "hole" in the enclosure.

First coat of "sludge" ran out of bondo for the rest of the enclosure lol.

stay away from useing alot of bondo.. and if you have a chance.. mix some resin with your bondo (w/ hardener).. you'll be able to lay it thinner and have more time setting it up

HardHitter 04-05-06 01:38 PM

tidbit, that's what I ment by sludge mix of resin/body filler

I just put on a second coat basically of it today and hopefully I'll be done with it, now I start sanding for a million years...

the more you do it the better you will get, thats a good first try, but it should really be alot more smooth even after it was just resin.

HardHitter 04-05-06 02:52 PM

yeh I know, but oh well, I'm not going for a perfect enclosure. I would start over again, but this thing is costing a lot to do and I'm not going to spend all that money again to make another one at this time lol.

HardHitter 04-13-06 12:01 AM

So I finished the enclosure, and I've decided I'm going to sell my 10W7 with the enclosure. Sub is just too loud for me and I'm going to tone down the low end a little. But heres pictures of the finish product. It's been a long journey but I believe it turned out nice.

PM me if you're interested in it.

turned out real clean and I bet that straight knocks your mellon!! Nice work man!! See all that criticized the surface, it does not matter when its covered. Some just hate sanding for hours in the sun! I like it and I bet it out performs most.:) Don't hate, congradulate!! Props from someone that is doing the same thing:icon_tup:
