Odd thing..... Need help identifying speakers!

Alright... so I've been the proud owner of a 1986 RX7 for about 5 days now. I want to replace the speakers in my car, but I cant tell what kind it has. It only has 2 at the moments, I geuss my car was bare-bones back in the day (only 2 speakers, no power steering or power anything). The previous owner put in a nice Blaupunkt head unit... but did not replace the speakers. I bought some 5 and 1/4s to put back there... but when I opened up the speaker cover the speakers are enclosed in a round enclosure with a wire harness attached at the bottom. From looking at it, I think there are 3 ground wires and 1 hot wire attached to the harness. The current speakers sound like hell (no mids or lows). What kind of speakers do I need for the back? What the hell is the Enclosure around the speakers for? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

you need 6.5's in the back
4" fit in the dash, and you can do what you wish with the storage bins =x

i have 6x9's there and they sound good, but get crazy and make a custom sub-enclosure and throw it in the bin

YEAH MAN

while you're at it you might as well just re-wire everything, too

6x9's aren't the best speakers to use a nice set of 61/2 inch co-ax's sound a lot cleaner and are able to make their way around the whole sound spectrum much better. i have 6x9's and i hate them i covered them and aimed them at the rear of the car to try and shut them up. Watch out if you have no sub, if you turn the bass up too loud most 4 inch dash speakers let you know that they hate what you are doing and sound like ass with all the distortion

just my 2 cents but i have learned from my mistakes and about 3 sets of good 4 inch speakers
