Need some guidance installing infill G4 carputer into the FD
 

I have to fill in alot of dead space. As far as I know there isn't a mounting kit for the FD is there?

Also, I assume I have to cut that separator bar between each DIN correct?

Ok since no one is helping! I started to test fit things and doubled check that I spliced the wires together correctly. All I need to do is to do the patch to get the bose amps to turn on.

There is one constant with this car. There is absolutely NO SPACE!!! I thought I would have enough but its going to be tight.

Does anyone know if I can cut that rear metal piece????

I used a chisel to take off that metal piece but you gotta remount the ground wire that attaches to it.

Thanks. I saw the ground wire. I have a ground wire going from the gauges so its not a problem.

I was wondering what you use to "support" the unit. That is, do you ISO mount it? Find a universal installation kit and modify it?

Sorry I only got a single din dvd but needed to remove that bar for clearance. The cage holds my single din well.

At least I preordered it and got $500 off. I figure it would be cheaper than building a system and have all of the benefites of a "deck" without the draw backs of a custom carputer. That is, the power on issue and hibernation, radio, etc...

Wow I just checked out the price and thats hardcore alright!

There is a Mazda kit available, but I have to warn you, it is a pain in the ass. When I used to do installations at Circuit City, we were tested on this kit. Basically, if you can put this kit together you can do any kit. The kit is made by Metra, and it was a universal Mazda kit for that time period. It is an orange package, I forgot the part number

YOU DO NOT NEED IT!!!. I forgot the FDs were ISO mounted, you can make your own bracket and than use ABS board for the trim.

just basic direction. How would you make the bracket? I mean just some aluminum sheets?

ABS = plastic

This is tricky, toyotas have the best bracket, you can get them from the dealer for $12-15. The holes will be off, but this is where the customizing omes in. I removed my radio from my FD a long time ago, I can't remeber what I did, I will try to look over it over the weekend.

anyways, I stopped by a local install shop and will probably have them install it. They do fiberglass work so they can make the bezel.

that looks soo slick. I wanted to go with a carputer, but my gf at the time gave me a whole sound system for free, dvd player, jbl speakers, amp and sub for christmas..so i couldnt complain. Either way the setup looks very slick man. Would live to see it when it's done..also love the wifi!

^Any updates on this? I went to the G4 user forum and the comments are brutal. Seems like most people feel they plunked down $2,000 to be a beta tester. Had to smile when I read the responses from the G4 engineers - "it's designed to work like that" or "just learn how to touch the screen differently". Brings me right back to memories of my software company and some of our lame responses:)

I agree....will let you know. The test run looked good with the datalogit plugged in. Just need to do a couple more things....

about 3 years ago i started a custom carputer project (this was before anyone offered a packaged solution). i've learned a lot and there's been a lot of products that have come out since then. even with software glitches, i would recommend the packages they have now over building your own unless you *really* need the extras that the package can't offer. the only thing i really enjoyed about mine was 5.1 surround for watching movies. the wiring was a bitch, but i did learn that there are power supplies that are made for car pc's and will turn on amp/computer/etc sequentially and will automatically turn things on and off by way of watching for ignition (and you can set shutdown time that it'll take before turning off power after you turn off the car).

good luck getting it fit man. i had to do my own fiberglassing and relocate my climate controls ('01 ford taurus). i hope the stereo shop does good fiberglass work for you :D when you get it back, make sure you do what you can to test it and make sure it feels strong enough (i had a guy try to make a bracket for me, and used a lot of bondo, and it ended up cracking in a bunch of places)
