Just started a Rustoleum Paintjob today

Started today, sanded down the factory paint, and sprayed it with primer, and then got 2 coats of black enamel on it before it got too dark to continue.

This kinda goes hand in hand with the stainless steel dash im making (since I ripped out the stock one) Paint drying, work on the dash...anyways, on to the painting. got all the little pinholes with rust out, and tried to get rid of some of the rock chips, but short of going down to bare metal, I didnt really have much of an option.

So instead, im just going to make them look a little less obvious, and make it one of those 4ft jobs. It doesnt look too bad right now, I knocked down the primer a bit with 320, and then wiped it down with a paper towel.

Thats what it looked like just before I laid the color down on it.

Thats what it looks like after 2 coats. It has those wet spots because im trying to build up the rock chips a little bit to help hide them (havent wet sanded it yet).

I put the hood back on the car (I live at an apartment, dont trust people around here...) and it looks damn good. Cant wait to get another 2 or 3 coats down, and then polish it up and spray some clear on it/wax it.

Theres a picture of it on the car. Sorry that its so dark, but by the time I got everything cleaned up it was after sunset.

Thoughts so far?

dont spray clear over it. especially if you plan on rattle canning it. if you try to spray clear coat over oil based paint it wont work. just wet sand it after 10 or so coats of rustolium and thats as good as it gets.

I hope the wind wasn't blowing with all those other cars parked so close.

wait.... your spraying it with rustolium? you need to roll it on. thin it out a ton and put like 20 coats on. looks mucho better.

When I say clear, I mean Clear Enamel by Rustoleum. No the wind wasnt blowing, and thats the reason we stood it up.

I know how much I hate overspray and crap on my car, I wouldnt do anything to mess with someone elses.

I have thought about rolling it on, but I dunno, no one had really done the rattle can that I had seen. Thought I might as well try it.

everyone has done the rattle can and it turns out like ass unless its flat. if you roll it on it will be far less blotchy.

^Good to hear.

I just want a paintjob that looks decent from 4ft away. Its not a show car, its going to be an offroad (think WRC, not 4x4) used vehicle. As well as autocross, and random stupidity. I dont want something that I am worried about scratching.

My question is, has anyone that rattle canned it, used polishing compound to smooth it out and make it look uniform?

I have seen rolled on rustoleum (Tremclad for Canadian readers) paint jobs that look fantastic. I saw an old school Porsche 911S with a glossy black tremclad paint job and it was amazing, even more so because it cost the guy less than $60 in materials. He probably spent around 100 hours doing prep work though.

Current progress on on my rustoleum job. This is a spray and roll combo. I sprayed first to build the color and I'm gonna roll it to finish it

There's an excellent HOW-TO thread on this subject in the 1st gen specific section.
