I plasti-dipped my FC

I was getting tired of the crappy paint-job the po did since it was flaking and had some rust starting to show up in spots, figured I'd fix it myself until i get a proper paint-job.

For $300 including the cost of an hvlp gun and a few other things, i think it looks awesome.

Bubble Tech 06-07-13 02:28 AM

cool. wish the pic worked.. ill be dipping my car in the next few weeks..

Version6 06-07-13 03:25 AM

Whoops! Imageshack fails, Let's see if it tinypic works.http://i42.tinypic.com/2nqw58z.jpg

DriftDreamzSS 06-07-13 04:26 AM

Nice, I was skeptical of plastidip at first but after doing some exterior trim pieces with it on my other car I'm pretty impressed. Its cool how it leaves the original paint/surface un affected when you peel it off.

Version6 06-07-13 04:42 AM

It does leave paint unaffected, though if you have a crappy paint-job that's flaking, as it dries and shrinks, the plasti-dip will lift it up if its by a sharp edge or you peel it off. I have to fix the headlight covers on mine because it lifted the paint (I'll take pictures)

theprophet36 06-07-13 05:13 AM

Looks great! Love that stuff

Version6 06-07-13 02:39 PM

http://i43.tinypic.com/n3stqr.jpg here's a shot of the issue i was having with some of the old paint peeling while the dip dried

con-3-fc3s 06-09-13 01:51 AM

Can you take closer pics of the body?.. It looks awesome!..

Version6 06-12-13 05:40 AM

Sure thing, I'm not actually done though. It took me 6 hours of prepping and painting to get where it's at. Since then the weather has yet to cooperate with the days I have off.

I maybe used 1 1/2 gallons of the premixed plasti-dip from DYC.com out of the 3 gallons I ordered.

Looks great!!!

Tp3RX7 06-12-13 11:40 PM

looks awesome! good work!

Corifto 06-13-13 01:18 AM

It does look really good. Nice job.

I will say, with PlastiDip, just make sure you apply a good number of coats. That's how it peels smoothly. I've seen wheels with too few coats ruin finishes underneath.

clanci 06-13-13 03:00 PM

great job I'm going to try white plasti dip this weekend I'm excited to see the outcome! But your pics have confirmed me doing mine!

ShenStyles 06-13-13 09:40 PM

How many gallons total do you think it will take to finish the job?

Corifto 06-13-13 09:48 PM

The DipYourCar.com website recommends 3 gallons for most cars. They sell full kits w/sprayers and everything for $299. They recommend 5-6 coats.

Version6 06-13-13 10:00 PM

@ Corifto
No worries, the paint on my car was junk, the only "problem" spot i'm gonna have is the driver side rear quarter where i repaired some rust.

@ShenStyles
To finish, just 1 1/2 gallons... In total, 3gallons

Cool. Carry on then. It looks good. I think the product is amazing for what it does. And it's price is quite fair.

schaft 06-13-13 10:11 PM

Thanks man. I've been wanting to plasti-dip the fc so I could change it up whenever. All I'm gonna need is a gun, since I have all necessary air equipment. (if I don't need a special gun)

Corifto 06-13-13 10:24 PM

They sell prethinned product for normal guns if I recall correctly.

Version6 06-13-13 11:15 PM

Yes, the gallon sizes are pre-thinned and You can use a generic hvlp gun. Dipyourcar.com has a pro-car kit, which has everything you need to paint.

I'll make a video about the "trouble" spots on FC's sometime this weekend.

ShenStyles 06-14-13 10:19 AM

That's wsup, I'm lookin forward to seeing this car complete. I wanna see how well this turns out.

Version6 06-20-13 11:28 PM

So i forgot the details for my youtube account. I'll set up a new one when i get home. Would have done it sooner, but I've been installing some "go faster bits" over the past few days

Endlesss 07-15-13 01:59 AM

invinciblejets 07-20-13 10:00 PM

Shoulda done matte white with the black mouldings......

I plan on doing my vert white.

SgtTickle 08-21-13 01:19 PM

I'm considering the plastidip route to repaint the car, would you recommend the ready to spray canned plastidip from like home depot to do the whole car?

evo_koa 08-21-13 02:28 PM

lookin good!

Jdmdrew 08-28-13 12:07 AM

not bad

nealcam 08-28-13 01:30 PM

Looks good. I just bought 3 gallons of white for my FD

RiceFx306 08-29-13 02:14 AM

Just to let you know they recommend a gray or a black basecoat (I don't recall which off the top of my head). There's some kind of chemical issue with being able to peel off the white cleanly like the the other colors so a few coats of the other color ensures easy removal. Just dropping that tidbit.

Do you have a link to share?

I am thinking about doing this. It's been a few months now, are you happy with it still?

Any photos of door jams you could share? Thanks.

slamburgalr 09-04-13 10:37 PM

I have plasti dipped several sets of wheels and other goodies. I almost plasti dipped my volvo wagon. Butttt it was totaled first :(. Your dipp job looks killer man! My paint job on my FB was done by prev owner at maaco for like 200 bucks lol. and no body work done. I may have to do some body work and then plasti dip my rx. Again looks fantastic.

ChiGod666 09-04-13 11:33 PM

They have a glossifier, but I can't say how much of a difference it makes as I've only seen it on youtube.

JZA80twins 11-13-13 09:36 PM
