How man K's should i go with HID's
 

A buddy of mine is working at a company which just imorted a bunch of HID kits. He hooked up the 6000k, 8000k and 10,000k. I was going to pickup the 6000k because anything higher than that is illiegal, but he was telling me that i should go with the 8000 because it looks much nicer than the 6000k.
is their a big difference it the brightness for both? am i going to get hassled by cop's for the 8000k?
What do you guys think?

I think it's unlikely that a cop would pull you over just because he thinks your headlights are too bright. If you're doing something real stupid though, he may give you a combo ticket. For example, I've run with no front plate on any of my 5 cars for better than 5 years without ever getting a ticket, even though a front plate is mandatory in this state. I had a friend who was a constable that said it was fine, but you should keep the other plate in the car in case you get pulled over so they won't think it was fraudulent (like two cars with same plates)

hey thats a really good point with the plates, i too got a ticket for no front plates, but they said they would of let me go if i had it in the car. From know on im going to leave my front plate in my car

yeah, I just stick it under the driver's seat, next to my 45 :D just kidding :P

Under "Understanding the "K" Factor - K stands for Kelvin." was some very good info, this actually answered my question since blue light's in Ontario are illiegal and the local cops do bust balls for blue lights

Under 6k... anything over that is rice, illegal in most areas, and ugly.

Oncoming cars with HIDs hurt my eyes. Sometimes they piss me off.

Icemark has a good HID set on his website.

6000K is a crystal white, no real color change than traditional lights but more light on the road

6500K is more of a purple light, easy to tell they are HIDs

8000k is what i have and is more of a crystal blue color, not like the blue tinted halogens, a much nicer color but blue is all too common.


i prefer the purple for color but the crystal white is what i would go with for a daily driver if you don't want to worry about being hassled by cops.

Just so you know, the colors (6000 K, 8000 K ect) don't have anything to do with the brightness.

And yes cops will pull you over if the lights are too bright.

To the originators question:

6000K is the color of most OEM Japanese HID lights, while 8000 K is simular to the European HID lights found on Audi and BMW.

im going 8000k

The higher the K rating, the more "blue/purple" the light output will be. As the K rating goes up, light output goes DOWN..

The lower the K rating, the more white the light output will be. As the K rating goes down, light output goes UP.

4300k is the stock rating on BMW, LEXUS, AUDI... etc. they only look purple from a distance because you're seeing the light at an angle as it passes through the edge of the lens. obviously if you stare head on or you're inside the car the light is white not purple.

4300k is the whitest and brightest light available anything higher you're losing lumens in the pursuit of a blueish light.

also.. if you were to research bluish light is straining and fatiguing to the eyes.

I took a look at a couple of HID's and have to admit the 8000k and 10000k look really nice with the hint of blue/purple, but the most practical is the 6000K.

i bought the H4 light conversion, do you guys think i should remove that center reflector thing in the lense, it looks like the kit i bought allows you to remove it?

Hint of blue? lol... looks more like a blue search light.

yeah youre right it was pretty blue, we had them hooked up indoors so i guess the light was a little distorted

Rx7-rice eater: 4300k is stock on BMW/Audi etc. 6000k is not the most practical, and is quite blue. :(

The higher K HID kits might look good on a show car and when they are approaching you - but how often are you going to be watching your car from a distance? Wouldn't you rather have more usable light on the road to drive with? After comparing most of the temps available side by side, from 4300 to 12000, I went with a 4700K for my car and couldn't be happier. Now to get some fogs in the 3kish range..

I'd go with 6k max. 8k is too blue and may be more illegal in some states.
