Hood pins.

I have a FG hood from the latest GB and even though It was not required I was thinking about hood pins.

Are they to be used with hoods that have no built in latch, or is it ok with any type of hood?

Also can you recommend a brand and place to look around for them. I did a search and came up with hits on spearco(SP) but wanted some options on looks and function.

Thanks.

I always recommend Jason @ the RX7Store, but I don't see hoodpins on his site.

I got my set of MOMO hood pins ($25) in silver from Baker Precision:

You can them pics of them on my car w/hood here:

Don't you have to worry about theft?? Are there locks or something that you can also buy?

Don't worry about theft because of the stock latch but I would think they would take the whole car if they had enough time to take the hood. Any other pins worth looking at?

user 84205 05-20-02 11:39 PM

you can also just check local companies ie... Summit racing, true choice, they are both really cheap I believe
and in my opinion a hood pin is hood pin. Ya theft isnt an issue, I mean you can any do soo much, but almost all hoods come with a hook for the stock latch. They hood pins are to try to keep the hood from cracking or just coming off...

Yes, I use the stock hood latch as well as the pins. The pins are a security to the stock latch and they eliminated the minor fluddering the MazdaSpeed Relica had at high speeds >120mph.

Normally I agree that a hood pin should be a hood pin but after seeing the pins at my local auto store (Advance auto) I can tell you there is some real crap out there. I don't want to clean the rust off after I wash the car if you know what I mean.

RX7FAN - I believe the MOMO pin clasps are mostly stainless, the bolt and actual pin was anodized. The Baker Precision folks were great when I called and asked them to describe the pieces to me before I purchased. One the the Baker guys said he has had them on his Supra for over a year without and problems. I've had mine now for over a month without issues.

OT...

nocab72, are you using the CF or FG replica?

Hyperite 05-21-02 02:42 PM

Yeah, my CF replica bounces around at high speeds or when passing semi-trucks. I'm looking for a pin that's easy to install and looks nice. Like where the hole is on the hood, i don't have the capacity to rivit the metal plate. Thoughts?

How about the hood locks? I noticed Steve Kan has them on his hood. They use a key (the circular shaped keys like you see on vending machines.....whatever they are called) and it seems like a good anti-theft precautionary measure. Where can these be purchased?

user 84205 05-21-02 08:53 PM

Heath is agree with you, but if someone wants to get threw fiberglass, it doesnt take much but a good jump on the hood..

Heath 05-21-02 09:17 PM

Ha, well that's true! Hopefully I would hear that if I was around and run to my cars aid.

Something like this?

That's great for security, but how do you think it would fare in keeping the hood from flying off?

I would imagine they are as good as any pins.

One of the reason I got the FG replica was to hopefully avoid the "hood pin" issue. Now, if I can just get my car repainted so I can put it on! ;)

Alright, you've sold me, i'll order up a pair next week and let you know how i like 'em.

Locking Hood pins

Hey before you order take a look at these from summit. They are made by Mr. Gasket.

BRADYMAHONEY 05-22-02 12:13 PM

Anybody have more pics of some nice looking flush hood pins. I don't like the look of your average bulky pin.

rx7even 05-22-02 01:42 PM

I think these are about some of the best I've seen so far. They're very small, but do a good job of holding the hood down. They're made by Moroso (www.moroso.com. The recommend 6-8 to a hood, but with the stock latch in place, 2 should be plenty (I've seen many people running just 2 of these). They're pretty inexpensive too.

FG - I'm not a big fan of CF hoods.

So you noticed some fluttering?

I also have the FG, but I was not wanting to use hood pins.

I just ordered a set of these from Summit Racing last night. I'll probably pick up a set of Sparco pins too, then decide on which to use when I get the hood painted.
