Help! Im Repainting My Interior, Which Paint Is The Best That I Should Use On My Fd?

Hi I Need Help Deciding On What Paint To Buy, And How I Should Go About Re-painting My Interior... So Far My Choices On Paint Are:

Duplicolor-vinyl/fabric/dashboard Paint
Duplicolor-high Heat Engine Enamel (for Non Chipping/peeling)
And Plastidip (which Looks Great But I Dont Like The Rubbe Texture Too Much...

All Are Going To Be The Oem Flat-black... Any Tips Or Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated!!! Thanks, Robert...

I have been considering doing it as well. I was going to use Krylon Fusion, it's a plastic only paint made to actually bond with plastic.

i used fusion with my interior spray, it came out so-so, i also used a clear coat on top of it. I wasnt too impressed and would go with a different kind of paint next time. It didnt color match were well here, look at my cluster color compared to the dash piece, both same color and same spray can. Actually i think im going to get it professionally painted for around $200 and be done with it.

Was the color match your only gripe? Because I may not go with black anyway. Did it not apply well? adhear well? bubble up, or what?

purerx7 12-02-06 02:29 PM

it bubbled several times actually and i had to re sand and apply again. Spray inside a tent or somewhere where their is NO wind, not even a little bit, no wind and no dust are a must. I didnt really like the finish on some parts either it was too inconsistent. Plus its a PITA, you have to sand it down and that takes forever, with hindsight I would definitely take it to the paint shop.

hmmm, so fusion isnt good?

silverflash2 12-02-06 04:49 PM

I had bad results with fusion also!

well i did a piece with duplicolor vinyl n fabric and it came out nice, but i heard it chips and flakes after a while, and i heard plasti-dip is great... but i dont like the texture, anyone ever try duplicolor engine enamel?

When I painted my center console, I prepped it by getting a razor blade and shaving as much of the stock 93 stuff Mazda used ( be carefull not to cut into the plastic) and went back with 700-800 grit sand paper and got the rest of it off and smoothed it out as much as possible wiped it down with windex, then used filler primer let it dry, wiped it down with windex and sprayed it with Plasti-cote satin black x3 coats. looks completely stock, no problems with bubbling chipping. Just make sure the pieces you are spraying are in a warm place 60 degrees or warmer.

- The duplicolor vinyl paints suck, wouldn't use engine paint on the interior for OEM look - I have seen them used and not at all impressed.

ok cool, so now im all for plasti dip... my concerns now are just the texture, that rubbery feeling, i dont like it too much, will it stay like that forever?

R_PROWESS 12-02-06 05:36 PM

i had good results with fusion.. then again my interior isnt black..

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...hmentid=185521

i used vinyl and fabric on the door and when my arm rubs it rubbed it out some

by the way don't clear coat fusion.. it doesn't like it... and it sometimes looks clouded over like a haze and doesnt dry as well

eightsixlife 12-02-06 06:01 PM

wow, hey keith your interior looks really good, the blue is clean and you matched it well... so i decided im not going to use fusion though, i had a chat with chris and he said he used a paint called plastikote, it doesnt chip or flake, hes had it on for 9 months, and doesnt have a "rubbery" texture, so hes going to pm me pics, and if like what i see, im going to buy it, thanks again chris...

p.s. anyone else ever use PLASTIKOTE? if so how did yours turn out?

thanks robert...

I've used the engine enamel

I redid a couple panels that got really scratched a while back with duplicolor low gloss black engine enamel. If you sand and prep the surfaces well it comes out very nice and I have not had anyone say they could see a difference

just make sure the piece you are painting is totally dry, and has a bit of "tooth" fot he paint to grip. I know in the picture it looks different, but it is the light, and the change in angle between the two pieces, in person it is a match

i actually used the duplicolor flat black fabric and vinyl and was actually very impressed with the results. it does have a bit of texture to it (i.e. it feels a little rough to the touch), but it matched the window and door switched perfectly in color. it takes a little time to work with, you have to apply very little at a time so it does not get all drippy in the panels, but the finish looked great.

kyrx7 12-21-06 03:07 PM

i used the krylon fusion on the hard plastics im changing mine from red to black to kickpanelks back bends. everything red is getting painted. krylon worked great on the hard red plastic but didnt work on the red vinyl door panels. so i scrubbed it off prepped and used the dupli-color fabric/vinyl and it worked great and matched well with the fusion. DONT USE FUSION ON VINYL
