Has anyone replaced the surface mount LEDs on their RX8 5 speed shift knob?

Think I will need to do this and was hoping for some advanced knowledge on the subject as to which items to purchase and where?

Anyone have to replace these or change out the color, that could offer some advice on finding the correct components and identifying part numbers?

They are surface mount and do not look very similar to anything that I have seen previously.

Pictures are not showing up very well in macro because of the chrome ring and dark ambient conditions, I will get it out of there and get some better descriptive pics tomorrow.(your really going to have to use your imagination for that second pic haha) i will get better pics when conditions allow tomorrow.

How does one determine the correct voltage and wattage ratings to purchase for replacments?

I am sure any similar sized component will work, but these look like a very broad light element and really look similar to the surface mount resistors in the physical appearance compared to the surface mount LEDs I have seen.

Yeah it's really hard to see if you can get the size of them i can find the exact ones you need, you will have to put new resistors in also since no led is the same unless they are from the same bin.

You can look through the catalog for other ones too but if you find out the dimensions of them it will be easier to find.

May I PM you if I think I have found a suitable choice and get the A OK wave?

I will get the calipers out and measure the leds and get the resistor identification numbers.

I can handle myself with electronics fairly well, but there are always these little hiccups that can occur when you have not made the mistep yet.

The stock system came with a inline 1 amp blade fuse



Are there any measurement I can make with my multimeter to help determine which components or any critical information might be helpful?

these are just preliminary numbers,calipers won't fit down into the little pocket,so I will have to remove one an clean it up to get good numbers tonight when I hav time.*

In my haste I forgot to write down the resistor number
IIRC the resistor reads 151

The traces are very poorly adhered to the substrate, but I think I can still work with it.

I can solder anything I can see, (have a fairly nice weller and needle sharp long tips to use, and have tackled much much more difficult items than this)

Just need the correct items to replace these.

I have not fully tested them, but I am fairly sure that the LEDs are indeed bad.
The blue resistor could be the issue as one side of the solder point came off instantly.

Its probably just electrical loss, but the terminals at the board are reading 10.28V
The battery is a little low at ~12.2V

Oh and I guess just for clarity, the is no through hole terminals, or components on the rear of the board.

Are those dimensions of the lens?

No,this is the dimension of the width of the complete led component
Solder points and width of component.

Will having the lens dimention be helpful?

I have it with me now,so it is easy to run out and measure real quick.

This is the closest I can find. Dimensions are 2.0mmx1.25mm.

There is also a opaque diffuser material that covers the leds, then the gear number cap covers this diffuser material.
So I am going to make a guess that physical size width x length should not be too critical.
Height will matter as the diffuser material sits on right on top of the LEDs, and there seems to be little extra room.
This component should work well as it is 0.9mm and the part I have measures 1.0mm

Now you mentioned getting a new resistor to match the new LEDs?
How do I go about this?
will it be similar to the "151"=150 ohms i think?

What specifically are you looking for to make a selection for these LEDs? I am looking through the data sheets and am unclear what factors would be critical in making the correct replacement.

It looks like I would need a 150 ohm resistor with the first suggestion part LH N974
And a 180 for part LS R976

Does this seem reasonable?

Which is great cause I am helping a friend with some LED work on a side project and it will prove most helpful.
