FD front/rear speaker upgrade - what to get?
 

Hi,

i need some speakers for the front/rear of my FD and don't know what to get. I searched but only found out sizes but not what current models are recommended.

front: 5-1/4 (maximum depth is 2,5")
rear: 6x8

correct me if this is wrong! Is this also right for series 8 fds (RB-S, non bose model)? This is important for me because i have one.

I want speakers that directly fit my stock (S8) brackets without drilling new holes or making spacers. Is there any trouble with wiring? Can i use the stock connectors? Sorry if this sounds stupid, but car audio has never been important for me.

What would you recommend? Headunit will be a Kenwood DNX series. no amp, no subwoofers. Quality should be decent, nothing high end but shouldnt sound like crap. If i had the choice, some bass would be nice. Should i use triaxial or coaxial?

I actually just had my stereo done about a month ago, and I would have to recommend some Clarion speakers with a Clarion Head unit. I have scraper with Hood sound (trunk rattlin'), and so I went with the high class sound for my FD. Since you have the non Bose FD, it shouldn't require too much extra work on the installers behalf. The Clarion set up I got fits into the full space of the original deck, so no custom work is required to fit the head unit. The sound is crisp and clear at all volumes. I also recommend that when you have the wiring done, you have the stereo wire wrapped in aluminum tape so that the engine noise does not transfer into the speakers at high rpm. Hopefully my info helps you out.

as for speaker choices, from my experience best interiors are always going to be a component speaker setup (tweeter is separate from woofer and has a crossover thingie)
as for brands, MB QUART i think makes the best interiors, but ive only dealt with models from 2000 to 2008. I've read the new ones sound different compared to the older ones, specifically the tweeters are too loud. Don't know if that is true or not. Another pretty good speaker company in my mind is audiobahn, at least for component interior woofers, I have those in my vw passat, and they sound great. Your also most likely going to need a 4channel amplifier to bump up the wattage if you think its not loud enough. Also, I recommend going overkill on max RMS wattage, you want the speakers to be rated for at least 20 to 40watts max RMS higher then your head unit or amplifier will ever put out to each speaker.

i don't want to get component speakers because they require custom work (placing the tweeters). nor do i want to buy a subwoofer/amp. So what kind of speakers should i get?

im confused, what do you still need. get the adapters from the link i posted in my first post, and go with whatever type 6.5" speaker you want to use. I recommend mb quart + audiobahn, because I've used their products in the past and like them. Others have used other manufacture speakers and like those so, as far as companies go, if you don't have a brand you like now... Go to a car stereo store and check out how different ones sound. Make sure the speakers are rated correctly too, RMS wattage wise. If you amp or headunit puts out say 25 RMS Wattage to each speaker get a speaker that can handle atleast 30RMS watts, btw, peak wattage is useless, get the RMS WATTAGE's for the speakers and headunit/amps...

Anybody know what size speaker I should get to replace the center channel? Mine's an '93 R1 and I have a feeling its just a blank spot with a grill on there right now.

Reason for asking is that I have a processor that's capable of tuning the center channel ... figured I'd take advantage of it if possible.

honestly, the center channel thing is more of a gimmick but alot of modern cars do have them
all stereo music is two channel and almost no car stereos can do 3 channel or 5.1 in the first place
