enclosure cu ft question

if i have a 10" sub (eclipse sw7000) with a recommended sealed enclosure size of 1 cu ft and my sealed enclosure is 1.2 cu ft... what do i do?
the brand new sub sounds like crap and i can already smell burning when i turn it up, is this because of enclosure size?
if i get .2 cu ft of something and stuff it in there will this remedy?

another thing, if my amp is 400wRMS 1200wPK what power sub should i get? the one i have is 450wRMS 1300wPK.

The sub box size is only going to make a difference in sound quality. But not a large difference. The recommended volume is 1 cubic foot. The smaller the box the higher notes will be louder, the larger the box the louder the low notes will be (for instance some SPL competition boxes are 4.5-6 cu ft). If you're smelling something burning, either you have something wired wrong or it could just be the scent of the fresh sub. Some subs have a distinct scent when they are being broken in.

Personally, I think you need to try tuning it again.

What brand amp are you using?

Is your sub a dual voice coil or single voice coil? This could make a huge difference if your speaker is not wired properly. Also, what ohm load is your speaker currently wired at? And the 400w RMS on your amp is at what Ohm load?

Thanks for clearing up the enclosure size question.
the high notes of the sub sound absolutely horrible, lows are usually fine. i dont listen to hip-hop so my sub usage isnt the conventional thump. more guitar bass, more highs.

i am powering it with a US Amps 400X. according to the literature it should be at a 4 ohm load right now @ 400wRMS 1200wPK, but the differences of the different years 400's and 400x's lead me to believe that it might be @ a 2 ohm load depending on the year of production of my amp, this is unlikely though.
it is bridged and yes, the sub is dual voice coil. should i unbridge it and run a wire for each coil?
