EL NENE 7's-- Fiberglass sub enclosure project

I am building my sub box its based off the original location of the oem bins. Now what i wanted to do is build a box that will have some bang yet it wont be that heavy. The frame that i am using is the original bins frame wich is made out of fiberglass.I am going with 2 15" because of the air space and distance from the surface arc to the rear of the window/trunk. Yeah yeah i know i am adding weight to it, so what i have removed enought weight on the car to make dues for the subs and box.

now i did them in an angle so it would look more 3d and i decided to add it some flare so i rigged up a rotor out of mdf so it can be complete.

No Flaming If You Dont Like It Pass The Hell On,

Those are going to be HUGE and VERY loud when you get them in. I like the rotor design in the middle though, nice touch!

(as a side note, nice seat!)

I'd dump the rotor motif. It looks like a giant insect is getting ready to swallow me.

ultmtrx8 11-21-06 12:13 PM

i think it looks good. you know what kind of subs and amps you will have? and what will be the watts on them?

Alex Rodriguez 11-21-06 12:54 PM

I am going all alpine...the subs will be the type r and the mids and highs are all type r

John64 11-21-06 02:17 PM

I don't think your going to have near enough air space for those. One 15" will need at least 1.5 cuft of space, that would be at least both those bins together.
My sub box is the width the hatch plus the spaire tire well and it came out to 1.8cuft. Get some packing peanuts and poor them into you fiberglass bottom. Take them out and poor them into a square box. Measure the volume to the top and calculate the cuft of space they displaced. LxWxH in inches divided by 1728. I hope your going to reinforce that factory bins because those type R's will distroy them. I have 7 layers of mat in mine just to be strong enough. Oh the sub will displace .249cuft of internal space because of the basket, so your box is getting smaller and smaller.

Alex Rodriguez 11-21-06 03:14 PM

oh it will be good enough i might be short but i am in the range of 1.5-1.7ft...right now i am getting my frame first then , i will reenforce the structures, thickness, trust me it will sound nice,

the fiberglass frame of the bins is actually strong and sturdy, so i dont have a problem there my problem lies in if i should keep the individual or one big box, now i will have a problem

Alex Rodriguez 11-21-06 03:16 PM

1.5ft with both bins together , no way 1 bin is plenty for each sub

John64 11-22-06 08:25 AM

Double check that. I think one of those bins are around a half cuft. The bins in a first gen are bigger and only came in at just over .5 cuft. Oh, if you think those factory boxes are strong enough, more power to yah. They will be vibrating like a mofo. I hope your project goes well, I'm just trying to give you a little insite thats all.

P.S. my box is bigger then both of your together and you think your getting 1.7cuft! Just do the test I told you about and you will be very suprised. It will be good enoough for 1 sub not 2.

Alex Rodriguez 11-22-06 12:35 PM

ok thanks i will see how it will sound

Turbo 3 11-25-06 02:05 PM

I was always a fan of 3-8's vs. the 2-12's or 15's. Much more responsive and pushed nearly the same amount of air without the massive space requirements of 15's.

Take it you go for the raw DB and not SQ?

Alex Rodriguez 11-26-06 12:36 AM

got the box glassed already and it goes in and out of the car flawlessly....now i am just making it thick enough so it doesnt flex...i am still in the air because of the size of the box now, i did the packaging peunuts trick and now that i am making the box thick i am loosing air space=volume

so i might make another ring and lay it over the 15" to make it compatible for 12"s

i will post pics soon of it in the car

Well now all i have to do is make it thicker i am working from the bottom up so it will take a bit, the fun part will be getting the box straight

I think your idea to go with the 12's is a good idea. They require a lot less air space, are much lighter, and will sound better to you inside the car. 15's are loud but require more space to unload the sound. 15's sound better down the block but not in your car.

John64 11-26-06 12:46 PM

I like the looks. Whats the internal volume after that peanut test? Remember to take out the volume of the sub basket into your calculation. After about 5 layers of fiberglass, take a mixture of bondo and fiberglass resin and mix in the MKP. Take this mixture and poor it into the enclosure and move the box around. It will seal it real nice.

P.S. I hope you made those rings bigger because the sub will not sit flat on the staples and fleece.
Your ring should have looked like this:
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...49_98_full.jpg
The sub is reset into the ring and around the outside I routered in a recess for the fleece to staple too. This way when you sand it, it does not weaken the area around the rings.

Alex Rodriguez 11-26-06 03:23 PM

hey john thats exactly what i am gonna do...i know the staple thing is kinda tacky but it worked flawlessly i did your peanut test and i came short by .2 ft i got just about 1.2ft but alpine says average box for the sub should be 1.2-1.9ft
1.7ft is best but when i did this i didnt even think about when that speaker goes in there its gonna take up atleast. .5 ft so i am shit out of luck with the 15"s

but its gonna be good for 12''s so as i am still making it thick ,my next step will be those rings thanks john by any chance would you have the measurement of that ring

the outer most part

John64 11-26-06 06:52 PM

Its for my 15, so if your going for 12's it won't work. The easiest thing to do is to make the cutout for your sub on a sheet of MDF. Put your sub in the hole and take a pencil compass and give yourself another 1" all the way around. You will make 2 rings, one is full size plus the 1" the next will be full size on the outside but the cutout in the middle will the the outside dimension of the sub plus 1/4". Hope this makes sence, but as you can see the ring is 2 peices of 3/4" MDF sandwhiched together. When your all done take a router and use a 1/4 rabbit bit and set it about 1/4 deep to do the cutout around the ring for your fiberglassing. Glue the 2 together and use some clamps and your all set. I use a perfect circle jig for my router to make all my cutouts, but a jigsaw and patiences and you will be all set. Hit me up on AOLIM (spankmywankel) if you need to talk.

John

dayum el nene..... thats wild looking! i might have to have you build me (a smaller) one.... i have 1 12" fosgate hx2... thats enough bang for me:) i used to have 2 of them w/ 1800 watts powering them and 2 audiobahn bass capacitors:) looked great, was heavy as all hell, so it had to go:)

i want mine to come out of the spare tire area
