Dumbest Question? Could be!
Hello All,
Well, if you have seen Men in Black II by now, you have seen that sweet ass Mercedes E class. What I want to know is, is there actually a mechanism available to the public that automatically opens the doors in conjuntion with the keyless entry? If there is, I think that would be like 10 times as sweet as Lambo doors. I would think maybe it's something that could be offered for handicapped people? Help mme please! The new Lincoln Navigator commercials show that with the keyless entry, you can open doors, rear hatch, and lower the running boards, so the technology is available.

Right, I've seen that and it is sweet as hell, so the question is, how much would it be and could it be done on an FD?

I'm thinking you could use the same technology as they use when you shave your door handles? Solenoids or somthing?

Well I guess then is one of those moments I may actually neeed to use some muscle and push it open. Damn, what and inconveince! I wonder how heavy is heavy. If the cool can outwiegh the heavy and the expensive doeesnt break 2000, it would be something to at least look into. |
The new chrysler minivan has it on the rear hatch. If it can lift the rear hatch, then the side door should be no problem. Try your local salvage yard.

Why can't automakers stop fooling around with these BS options and make cars lighter, more efficient, safer and perform better. Instead, all the engineers are working on who gets a power back seat that flips down by itself or some other BS. If you can't fold down a seat, you shouldn't be fit to drive. |

It's not like I'm so handicapped that I cannot open a car door. I doubt Will Smith is either, but would it be pretty damn sweet for me to walk up to my FD, press a button and watch my doors swing out with the sound of pshhhh? I think so. I doubt that will make the car that much slower, and I'm not exactly looking into a 9 second car or anything..... |
It's not that much - check some street rod magazines...it's just a strong solenoid. It won't make a sweet noise, more like a knocking sound...I wouldn't recommend it for an FD unless you're just for show ;) But it is nice, maybe you could shave the door handles too.

what would be really badass, would be if you could get the gaulwing doors that have the auto open like that... now if that were possible (and in my budget, haha) i wouldnt care about how much it weighed... that would be the ultimate :)

Yes, gullwing=psychocool.... My dad has a gull wing car, a 1970 bricklin if you know what it is.....Painted VR hehehe.....I was thinking though, you would need a big parking space to get out in those..... I think that this could seriously be done. I mean I tihnk you could even use the type of thing that opens the hatch of an FD. All hatch openers are roughly the same. I think a type of shave door handles combined with this setup would do it, as long as you could find someboddy proficient in remote control technology to get the code of these things to make em work. And you would still be abale to open it manually. It's all very interesting.....:boink:

look at a truckin magazine... they have all types of kits.
If you shave the door handles, they have something they put down under the door on the underside of the car that you have to pull that pops the door open... |
HAHAHA - SiKoPaThX - that's crazy that your dad has a Bricklin! Do you have any pics of it?! My dad also has one he bought a few years back - it's great. The guy he bought it from custom did everything, it's a beautiful show car. It's just funny to see someone on the forum that has one since they're so limited, plus it was Canadian :-P...hahaha j/k Where did he buy his?

I'm not sure where he bought it right now, I'll have to ask him but he's had it since at least 92, it sits though :(
Everyone is trying to convince him but hes not very mechanically inclined. I would gfuess it has about 5000 in repairs. So sad, the car kicks tremendous ass! |
