component vs. regular?
 

can someone plz tell me the diffferences between the two. i know that the components wil be better. but are they worth the extra money? what is diiferent form those an normal speakers? is there just like a crossover for each individal sub mid and high? also which brand or components would yall recomend for a 89 tII?

A component set does have its own individual crossover with the set. They are usually for use with someone who is looking to put out high power from the speakers. Most people who just intend on running the speakers with an aftermarket head unit dont need components. If you intend on getting a set of components plan on amplification. It will add to the HUGE change in sound quality. They are very worth it. I run my own auto parts and audio store. and there are alot of brands out there. There are also lots of different setups as far as speaker and tweeter size that make the price vary so much from one to the other. Let me know if you want t aset and are looking for a cheaper price

Hey, I boght a pair of the kenwood 4" components for the dash in my 87 T2, and the Sony Xplod 800Watt 12 in a regular non-bandpass box. I currently have 6x9 boxes in my storage bins which I need to fill. I was looking for a suggestion on what 6x9's would work best with my setup. I am willing to spend more money for better sound if neseccary, but I'd liek to keep it fairly reasonable. Any help on making my stereo well rounded would be appreciated, Thanks.

Or would I just be better off ditching the 6x9's all together and getting some speakers for the shock towers??

thanx for the replys. i was planning on amplifing the normal speakers and trying to pu crossovers to them anyway. but that was before i new about component systems. i basically want the best for the money. i probably will be gettinga sub in the far future as the last thing to do to the car. but as far as sound goes i want to replace the head unit anddoor speakers first then do the sub last. i mainly am after quality and over all sound. not just bass. i normally like to listen to music louder than my stock stuff can handel so i always ride around with my friends who can turnit up. anyway. what do you recommend to do with the two sets o front speakers? just throw the 4" away and only use the doors ad\nd mount the tweaters up high? or put upgraded 4" in the dash to replace factorys? if you do this how do you wire up the amp? do you just split the front signal to the component and the speaker or what? i was just planning on ditching the dash speakers and running components inthe doors. any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. also which components are the best bang for the buck? cheaper kenwods or more expensive infinity or polk or rockard fosgate? or what.

A lot of what you are asking is based on personal preference. First of all, components are not always going to sound better than coax speakers. If you are at all concerned about imaging, you don't want to separate your tweeters from your mids by more than a couple inches. Tweeters placed high on the door with mids low on the door will distort the image significantly.

Therefore, most people who are buying speakers should buy good quality coax speakers. As for me, I chose MBQuart speakers. I was considering Infiniti Kappas and Memphis Audio speakers, but there really is no comparison. In my opinion, the Quarts blow them away. The Quarts also have very high dispersion titanium tweeters. This helps the image greatly so that you don't need to tilt the tweeters toward the the listening position. The tweeters can be a bit harsh, but this is easily fixed with head unit equalization.

Regarding the setup, I put 4" MBQuart coax speakers in the dash and 6.5" coaxes in the doors. I am fairly convinced that the dash speakers add to the sound. I am driving all 4 of these speakers, as well as a 10" Rockford sub with a Phoenix Gold 6-channel amp. I have a convertible and am driving the stock head rest speakers with the head unit through the existing stock head rest speaker amplifier using the stock controls.

I again agree with Dave, with the exception that I am rather partial to using just a 4" mid-range speaker in the dash rather than a Coax with its tweeter.

Sine the dash speakers really face down on a FC, IMO the tweeter is so far off axis anyway, it lowers the sound stage.

But again this is just personal preferance.
