brake caliper painting

anyone paint their calipers w/ just regular paint and not the high temp stuff? how did it turn out? i'm asking cause i'm taking my car to the body shop for paint and thought they might as well paint the calipers too while they're at it.

rx7tt95 10-07-02 05:36 PM

I used regular automotive on my calipers. It "may" burn off at the track but as yet, no problems.

You can get the high temp stuff cheap at any auto store, I got my clear at Walmart. It is just called high temp engine paint. I think the red I have is rated up to 1200º but only cost like 5$ if that. The white was normal model paint but I think the red will make a barrier of some sort. Then I sprayed it over with some of the same high temp engine paint but clear, only rated at 500º. They have held up great so far.

hey did you guys bother to take off the calipers completely or did you just spray em while on the car and you just masked everything off?

CYM GIRL 10-07-02 10:52 PM

I really like how the white and red looks on that caliper.

CowsniperRX7 10-07-02 11:13 PM

i just masked everything off and sprayed away. BTW i think i had the best looking callipers at the October 5th St. Louis Meet!!!...maybe

i painted mine red, and they are beautiful. For the front ones, paint the whole thing, then sand the paint off the mazda lettering, the finer the grade the longer it will take, but the better it will look. Just make sure not to sand too much and scrape a little off the part you want to be colored. I suggest putting a little peice of tape over the place's that would be vulnerable to being scratched off by the sand paper, ill have to put some pics of mine on here, but they look exactly like nocab72's except i didnt mask out the bolts

here is a link to his sight so you can see how good they look:

Yeah I masked everything off, if you get any on the rotor it will usually come off after you drive it. Just try not to paint on where the pads dont contact the rotor because that will stay on there.

i painted mine dark ford blue and polished where it says mazda and sumitumo. it looks damn good especialy because my car is montago blue. oh yeah and i took them completely off so that i could clean them to make sure i got a good seal.

ZMhacker 10-08-02 07:14 PM

If you have the resources, have them powder coated. It will last FOREVER :)

Fd3BOOST 10-09-02 01:38 AM

I agree with Chris just get the shit form Pep boys. High temp engine enamel. I think it was Ford Red. Lots of choices right? ha And the the white is just automotive touch up paint.

DaleClark 10-10-02 03:43 PM

You can acutally use Testor's Model Paint to paint the calipers - no kidding. It's an enamel, and the paint bakes it on hard. Just clean the caliper as best as you can with brake cleaner, scrub it down some, and just paint it on with a small brush. It goes on thick so you don't get brush strokes in the finish.

The whole setup will run ya like $3 a Wal-Mart :). 2 little bottles and a brush or two is all you need.

i'm not so sure that powder coating will hold up to the heat. i know that they make high temp stuff but i don't think that it goes that high.

for you guys that painted the calipers while they were still on the car: did you paint your rear brake pads too??? i think this looks silly, but i am curious.

also, has anyone with painted calipers changed their brake fluid yet? i have heard that it will melt off all of the paint and you have to do it all over again.

i am curious because i am planning to do this the next time i flush my brake fluid and change pads, and i want to do it right.

7-sins 10-15-02 12:45 PM

I did paint the back of the pads but it will change when I get new pads... If you are really worried about it you can remove the pads. I did a friends and thats how I did his.

yodaddy 10-15-02 10:57 PM

if you just keep the caliper protected from the fluid and wipe it off asap if you get some on it then you will be fine.

Black on Red

Has anyone painted black calipers on a red FD? I'd like to see a pic.

silverrotor 10-16-02 11:52 PM

My Calipers came sprayed In Yellow. Since than I replaced 3 of the 4 Calipers and have painted It the same colour. Summertime I will paint them Black with Silver Mazda lettering.

Good work.. its very clean and well done.. unlike some other attempts I've seen.. hehe..

On another note.. if its not high temp paint.. you may run the risk of having it discolor once it reaches a certain temp.. and then it'll look like trash.. and from what I hear.. brake fluid is a very good way to get rid of paint.... if ever someone pisses you off.. just "drop" some brake fluid on their paint.. and leave.. when they come out to wipe it off.. they'll see bare metal.. not that I would know.. thats just what I heard... :D

fdracer 10-18-02 04:12 PM

so you're the one that did that to my car, motherfucker! :)

Wormiez 10-20-02 07:14 PM

Plain ol black, polished silver ? red white?

7-sins 10-20-02 10:57 PM

On a VR I am thinking the Black with polished silver for some contrast or maybe the red and white like this....
