Bose Head unit replacement?

Hello. Well my head unit is about toast. My car is a touring with the Bose tape deck/cd (in dash). The CD player just spits the cd back out. The deck only works after being on for about 20 min or so.

***I DID search Bose and Bose head unit and found nothing...***

My ? is can I just replace the headunit, or will I have to rewire the whole system?
I know each driver has it's own amp and all the speakers seem to work fine once the headunit warms up....

I know the Bose system is pretty sucky, but I don't really wanna re-do the whole system as of yet.... Just want something to keep my mind off every little squeek and rattle these cars have......

Thanks..

Your search-foo is weak

Search the Interior/Exterior... part of the forum. At one time, I too thought the bose blows.

The bose system was specifically engineered to the 3rd gen, apparently taking into consideration things such as the materials of your seatcovers.

You may end up checking your speaker amps, I found one of my subwoof amps in the snake tube hadn't been working so for years I felt the sound system sounded sub par, though it was a broken part.

The cd can be removed but a jumper wire must be used.

OEM headunits may be difficult to repair, I have to resolder an IC chip and hope that fixes mine, or hope this chip becomes more readily available, then still I have a 19 year old headunit.

If you decide to replace the head unit, i believe the schosche adapter keeps your speakers and some kenwood models are suggested as near replacement. good luck.

Easiest and Best fix is to replace the existing units with a later model Mazda Bose headunit that has the CD built in. All you have to do is cut out the din separator plastic and the newer double din unit will fit right in. Just be sure to get a Bose Unit.

We did this a few years ago and it updates the look and sounds great.
Found ours on Ebay.

Here's a pic of the late model ('o5, I think) Bose headunit.

I also believe that bose still sell that amps found in the FD for about $70. You could call bose and see what they say about the headunit.

+1 for ^^^^^ for simple and factory. If your leaning to upgrade the the overall sound quality it'll get more technical. With the bose amp needing to be bypassed. Grab yourself a dash kit, plug kit, and ant. adapter from mertaonline.com. Then a quality CD player with the features you want CD/MP3/SAT Ready/AUX out/Ipod/remote ect. and run new speaker wire to all speakers dont for get the center. Later upgrade your speakers with 2 or 3 way speaker pioneer is fine. Then if your really getting into it tuck 2 JL 8inch woofers in the compartment behind your seat (custom fiberglass) you'll add weoght but youll be bumping. if you have any ??? i can help.

I found an adapter at crutchfield for $40. The stupid thing is that I had to use the link from this site. When I punch in my car and "bose" system it just gives me the basic $10 adapter? Maybe you don't need the more expensive one with level adjustments after all? I would like to just go with the updated mazda/bose headunit but find myself always listening to pandora anymore anyways so I'm gonna have to go aftermarket....

You can always get a bose head unit from a Mazda Milenia and swap some wires, or you can install aftermarket head unit with a metra harness adapter like i did.

Looks nice!! Did the metra adapter have the line level adjustments like the scosche? I'm thinking it may not be needed?

Hi!

Is the unit you describe specifically for the 3rd gen RX7? I'm wondering out to define it precisely if I try to find one on ebay?

Thanks

The ONLY difference with the "later" Mazda Bose units is that they are "double-din". You just have to remove a plastic divider and that changes the FD to a double din. Bose units are available for multiple later model Mazdas.

Please don't hack your wiring harness. Use a $4 radio harness adaptor such as the one here:

The cd player in my 95 started spitting out cds and skipped b4 that. I looked up a couple of internet repair shops. The first one I called said send it in, we will fix it and they did. Then called me up when it was done to tell me it would be better than b4 and when running cds to hit the stop button and then eject and I would not have any problems. Don't leave the cd in when you shut it down and don't eject until you hit the stop button. that was 4 years ago, They were right, never has give me any problems.

I love the full sceens out there. I even have one but I just can't change from OE.

I cant even get my stock bose head unit/cd player out!! I bought the little tools to place in the holes and neither one will pull out!!! I can get them to come out about 1/4" releasing the locks then they just suck back it. WTH!! I have bent the frickin tools trying to apply enough outward pressure to keep them from pulling out. Do both decks have to come out at the same time or something??

bigolsen 09-04-12 03:34 AM

Ok, after much pulling, they finally came out. I guess sitting in there for almost 20yrs is a good reason for them to be so stuck!!

I installed my alpine hu today. Everything powers up, but no sound. I did the wire switch in the harness to kick the amps on but Crutchfield did not send an antenna adapter... This wouldn't affect the amps kicking on would it?

The main reason I replaced the stereo is because the stocker would not come on untill after the car was on for 20 min or so..... Crap now I'm thinking maybe the factory amps were the problem and would only come on after they warmed up... But I don't see how ALL of them would start this at the same time....

Anybody?

Thanks

Bump......

I made sure power was getting through the connector to trigger the amps. Still nothing! At the same time I snipped the wires to center channel because I put a flyrx7 pod in. Would that effect anything?? I really don't wanna run more wires through this car. Especially through the doors.....

Found my write-up on the swap to a newer Bose headunit from several years ago. This system is still going strong with no problems.

You have to get a male to male antenna adapter. I picked one up at a local install shop for $5.

i have one of those but the female antenna plug in the car is smaller then the male/male adapter. i'm wondering id the antenna cable in the car is either broken or was replaced at some point.

bigolsen 10-15-12 04:04 PM

My car had two antenna female plugs. One small and one normal size...

Piglet 10-16-12 08:06 AM

gotcha, do you know if both wires "y" together or are the completely separate? i never saw a second wire but from what i read its deff suppose to have two.

bigolsen 10-16-12 11:54 AM

They must connect somewhere. My radio works fine with the one connection.
