Bose CD Auxillary Mod
 

OK, I've searched forever and can't find it again. Can someone point out the link for wiring up the stock Bose CD player for an external MP3 player input.

Essentially, we can keep everything as stock and bypass the CD player with an auxillary in for your MP3 player or whatever you want to connect - even another cd player if you get creative :)

we first rip open the Bose CD player. I've used a USB cable, because it is shielded has the right number of connections and is a cool way to get an interesting plug. Plus, it's really all I had lying around :)

we find the Line In for left and right channels, snip them and run 4 cables out for each end of the left and right channels. We also run our signal ground to the shield of the USB cable. I've used some heatshrick tubing to keep things insulated

well, that was a pain in the butt, in any case it's done. Now I gotta make the other end

now we need a box, a DPDT switch (one with 6 connectors), a female USB cable and a socket for out audio input

OK, so the CD circuit board side of our 2 line wires to the centre of the switch (this is our common). Other end of the wires that we snipped to one switchable side of our switch - so in this switch position is basically just rejoins the wires so the CD player will still play normally. Mine actually still plays most of the time - well this one anyway, I have 6 of these dumb Bose CD players ... the others make good bookends.

Wire up the 3.5mm (1/8th inch) audio socket to the other side of the switch, so we change the line in from the CD player to our new auxillary for an MP3 player or whatever.

$16 worth of parts and around 2 hours worth of mucking around with a soldering iron and I have kept my audio looking stock, no loss of functionality with the CD player or radio/cassette and I now can run anything I like through the Bose sound system.

The USB cable makes a neat way of pluging the box on. The box can be hidden under the dash, or in the gloce compartment.

Love the DIY methods! I bought an AuxMod Basic for the 05 Miata radio I installed and ran the AUX input through the ashtray.

Did this mod and it works great =) My original head unit was dead but when I plugged a new one it it worked just fine. I now use the top space for 3 guages and have a little slot that the aux cord comes out of. Velcro my zune HD to the dash and it works just great. Well, until I learned velcro backing melts in hot weather haha.

the instructions for the miata worked just fine. But instead of buying a new connector I just used the one to the CD player and took the wiring out from inside of the CD player like roland did above.

Wow this is neat! :bigthumb: My cd player doesn't work and I've been using a tape adapter for my MP3. I wanted to do something like this years ago but I'm getting ready to put in another stereo anyways.

Found one on ebay for 7.99; thought I'd give it a try.

For what it's worth, it works but the ipod doesn't have enough juice to power the speakers to be very loud. With the deck cranked up and the ipod on max, it's pretty quiet. So if you have a loud cbe I wouldn't recommend it.

Time for resurrection. I'm not sure if anyone looks at this thread anymore, but I have some useful information in regards to the link posted near the beginning of this thread http://www.miata.net/garage/external...interface.html. This information was very useful but wasn't quite correct. This was enough information to get me started, though. I did have success in adding an aux to my factory Bose/Clarion head unit. I used a 13 pin DIN cable that is widely available for Kenwood/Clarion/Blaupunkt/Aiwa head units for around $10. I cut it in half and used a multimeter to find the wires for pins 1-5. I soldered them to the 274-0246 normally closed 1/8 in stereo panel mount jack in this configuration

Hopefully this will help others in the future. Total cost was about $13 and it sounds great. You can also mount it wherever you like.

Since this didn't format the way I typed it I'm going to update it so it's easier to understand. I also wanted to mention that the 13 pin DIN cable I referenced is used for a CD changer or Sirius radio in the fore mentioned post.
