Black Paint Color options

Well, my car got bumped into and I got the insurance check, throwing some extra on top of it and my painter is going to do a full paint job/shave holes etc. He has his own mixing booth and can mix up pretty much any color I want, he has even done custom colors before. Anyway, I'm looking for some different types of black, as with metallic flake and whatnot they are all a bit different, so far I've been looking at Mazda's Metallic black mica, ford's tuxedo black, and lotus phantom black. Course it's really tough to find good pictures of these colors so if anyone has some pictures of these or other colors to suggest I would really appreciate it =) And yes it will be staying black, only other color I might even consider would be a dark titanium color. but I love my black cars so it's not likely.

I've been told before by a paint supplier that black is black... this might be incorrect

I like the Infiniti Obsidian Black

A friend of mine is looking to have his FB painted in Mazda's metallic black mica. He tells me it has a copper look to it with the flakes.

Here is a vid he sent me at around :44 sec you can see the flake.

As far as blacks go, my personal favorite is Subaru's Obsidian Black Pearl. Its pretty much black at all times, but if you catch it in the right lighting, it has some really deep blue/purple and a little bit of green metallic tones to it. In person, it is truly a stellar color. Paint code is 32J. Here is the best example I could find on the internet:

Mercedes-Benz also has a really nice Obsidian Black. Its more or less just a deep deep blue. I like the Subaru color for its blueish purples.

Must be more than one "black" as Lotus offers several, but then they offer multiple shades of greys, yellows, oranges, silvers, whites, reds, greens and blues all at different prices.

Hey have a look at BMW paint code # 303 which is called "Cosmos Black Metallic".
Its black, but has a small amount of blue and red metallic flakes in it. My 5 Series is painted that color.
In the light, the metallic pops out as a red/blue. But on a dark or overcast day, it looks jet black :)

Here's some links to the color: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e34...-thread-7.html

Getting a cool metallic or pearl can be a cool effect, but it can also be a nightmare to match down the road if you need to get paint touched up or a body panel replaced. Don't go TOO exotic with paint, stick with a factory color.

Also good to get a true basecoat/clearcoat, single stage black scratches SUPER easy and always looks cobwebby. Ask me how I know :).

I'm biased but the factory brilliant black clear coat looks amazing once color sanded. Best of all it is pure black.

If your body shop guy/painter is worth his salt then he's going to have a big ass book full of paint colors that he has and can order.

Look through that and decide which one you like the best, you'll be able to look at it in person, in different lights.

You can also use the option of adding slight metallic or pearl effects to the paint to make it slightly unique. The thing with adding a metallic or pearl effect, as somebody else already stated, is that you've got to be VERY careful to match it correctly on any future replacements or touch-ups.

I was in Vegas recently and stopped by the Ferrari dealership in one of the casinos. When I repaint I'll probably go with the metallic black their California was painted in.

This is somewhat true, but you may get some manufacturers that may add a hint of blue or purple to their black. You also may run into a couple of blacks that have metallics, which would yeild a different color.

Instead for looking for pictures, I'd suggest keeping an eye out for black cars that you see on the street and notice the differences between a lighter (like the RX-8) or darker (Corvette/Audi) black. Personally I like the black on the newer Benzes, although a subtle flake might also be nice. To help myself decide, I actually went to car dealerships to check out prospective colors.
