If it's for your FD...............forget about keyless entry..........almost all of the systems will break the cable that unlocks the passenger door, and it's not cheap to replace ($250).
I've stuck with the stock alarm because of that. If there's a new one out there that will work...........let me know! |
Hmm, I've installed a lot of alarms on FD's with keyless entry over many years - and I've never seen even one break. Use quality parts and have a competent installer and you shouldn't have problems.

I've had keyless entry on my fd 2 years now with no probs at all.

Can anyone tell me what alarms THEY have on their car? Impressions?

crimestopper cs-2016 with paging unit, pages me on the remote up to 1/2 mile away if there are any problems, has a remote start for a manual, and a built in turbo timer. I love it, and Im an authorized dealer too, so it works well

Here goes: When you are buying (or looking at buying) an alarm, you have to decide what you want the alarm to do before you go looking for a specific brand. All of the brands mentioned above are probibly reputable and work terrifically.
What are you trying to protect? Are you worried about someone stealing your car? Are you worried about someone taking the contents of your car? or are you worried about someone vandelizing (sp?) your car? You should decide the level of security you want before anything else. It is really, really hard to protect against vandelism; easier to protect the contents and easier still to protect the actual car. Just remember... if someone wants it, they are going to take it... alarm or no! You should also decide the convienence features you want to have (or might want to have in the future). For example: trunk pop, parking light flash, horn honk, window roll-up/-down, sunroof roll-up/-down, remote start, remote controlled things (neon, radio, robotics, hydraulics etc). Most of these require extra outputs to control, so choose an alarm that will suit your needs. HAVE THE ALARM PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED! Choose a reputable shop that you trust to install the alarm properly. This will prevent any problems from occuring due to the installation. Most alarms warrenty's are only valid if an authorized dealer installs them, and shops will warrenty their work so if anything goes wrong you will be covered. That said I have a viper 690xv in my car (240sx) and I have had no problems that were not self-inflicted. |
I'm worried about vandalizing and someone actually stealing the car. I'm thinking about going with a viper with glass sensors. Thanks everyone for your input . . . good essay Iggy76 :D

Just a misc. FYI: the prestige APS996 has a "higher range" version out called the APS996A.
As for the keyless entry snapping cables. I believe that was the problem for people who clamped the actuator arm's linkage to the cable's crimped-on end. It's tempting to do because it's easy. If you hook the linkage up to the inside lock lever's plastic arm, it helps distribute the actuator's force... at least that's the plausible semi-explaination. It worked fine for me and for many others. YMMV, but if it breaks on you, you'd be the first I've heard of. ;) Search for a post by NewbernD. I think he's the originator of the idea. There's a pic posted of a red FD door that will describe the whole thing. |
