99 spec turn signals? authentic or replica?

so looking around there are a bunch of fd owners with the 99 spec front bumper.. now i noticed everything is sold separately and the turn lights alone are $300+

i read a thread with a guy who has replicas and said they fit perfectly fine.. now heres the question.. do you own replicas or the authentic ones? if authentic, why did you take the ~$80 replica leap to the $325? leap for the authentic ones? besides staying mad jdm yo idk why pay so much more? state your inputs.

Would it be possible to open the replicas by baking them and painting the plastichrome a dark grey?

I'm not sure what difference it makes really, some local guy waited months for his OEM models, are they all DOT approved? You can buy the after market ones with blacked out surrounds. I have after market s6 indicator/running lamps like this for my car and i really like them, they're nice without being rice.

are you kidding me? you are worried about $300+ lights on a timeless car... wait till you need a new engine or something costly that is 10 times as much. what will you do when that happens? :crzyeye:

I have owned both...............

Originally I purchased the OEM turn signals through Mazda Motorsports, $400 for the pair.

I cracked the lens on one during a lapping day. Since they are listed separately I purchased just the one side for $200.

Couple months later I cracked the lens on the same side again (another lapping day).

eBay had a replica PAIR for the cost of ONE OEM light. So I purchased a set.

One of the differances I notice between the two is the turn signal bulb on the OEM is a 3157 double filament wedge basetype that plugs in.

The replica use the older 1157 bayonet twist type bulb.

I now apply racer tape over my lights to protect the lens. Seams to help, 8 track events later & no cracks. Just need to remember to remove the tape before I drive home.

Depo makes a replica of OEM lights. From what I've seen, they make quality products so I'm gonna try a set of Depo's when I get my FEED front bumper. They are only $80 or so on Ebay.

muibubbles 08-21-08 06:15 PM

yeah i was thinking depo aswell..

KKMpunkrock2011 08-22-08 03:58 PM

let me know how this turns out as I just got hit and i'm thinking about cashing out and getting the 99 spec bumper and turn lamps, also, how much work is it to get the 99 turnlamps to work with the stock signals?

I got mines from MAZDA for $350 and love them, but never tried the ebay ones but they look pretty nice

I've heard there can be a problem with replicas with the bulbs burning and sometimes melting the clear plastic, and you have to use LED bulbs instead. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Would not be a problem at all, you could also use a blow dryer or a heat gun.

I have had replica turn signals for close to three years. It is one of few things on my fd that has NOT had a problem.

^Where did you get yours from? Did you splice the wiring or get the harness? Do they use the same bulbs as stock?

I got mine from http://www.makotoautotrends.com. Came with a wiring harness, plug n play. I upgraded the bulbs but you can use the same bulbs as stock.

Awesome, thanks!

EDIT: They don't have black inner housings? Do you have chrome ones or did they have black inners there when you got yours?

The website only listed the chrome ones, I had to call them to order the black or "smoked" housings, no additional charge. Hard to beat at $120.

^Oh OK cool, thanks for the info!

Here is my review thread. https://www.rx7club.com/interior-exterior-audio-26/99spec-combo-light-comparison-oem-vs-replicas-facts-736496/
I have owned OEM and replica's and used both for extended periods of time. Go with the replica's... there is little to no visual difference as you can see in my review with very detailed pictures. I have also never had a set of replica's "melt" as some ppl claim but have never been able to produce any pictures of... to include 800mile trips to florida in August with them on the whole way.

Edit: I forgot that the thread links it to the review on "another" forum that this forum censors. I'll just say that the replica's work just as well as the OEM ones and look the same for a 1/3rd of the price.

speedjunkie 02-01-09 07:59 PM

^Cool, thanks Brent!

Can you post pics and the number of the place you ordered the lights from?
