3 Stage Vintage Red Paint
 

Does anyone have any good or bad experience color matching the 3 stage Vintage Red color on the touring models? my body shop told me originally they could get a perfect match, and unfortunately after i got the peices back it was way off(see photo). now they are telling me its "as good of a match as they can get" and the only way to get it perfect is to blend it into the factory paint.

im in a little bit of a situation where i dont know what to do because i dont want this color blended into my factory paint. just wanting to get some second opinions and see if anyone else has ran into this problem before, and make sure im being reasonable.

To begin with, are you sure your red is "Vintage Red" ? To me it looks more like a "Blaze Red". :scratch:

its the factory 95' PEP package "NU" vintage red. unless the car was repainted and they did an amazing job.

As you can see, "Vintage Red", tends to go towards a slighter brownish tone, which matches your rear bumper (which if I understand correctly is the part thats been repainted and you're not happy with), but then my opinion could be worthless :egrin:

okay so yes i have also had this issue, my car is a jdm 92 vintage red code # NU but when i had my hatch painted a month ago it is a bit off. having experience with autobody, the temperature and other variable like time, location vs. new paint application curing time, type of paint, brand etc. Red is often hard to match similar to yellow. yours is about the same as mine. close enough but not perfect. i bet is shows more in direct sun? most matchings do this even black which is suppose to be the easiest color to match.

mine is more orange tinted which makes sense as yellow and orange are needed to mix into the base to get Vintage Red along with white i believe. get one drop wrong and well......

This is good info. I am getting ready to have my 94 Vintage Red resprayed and I'll make sure that the body shop does a spray out in both colors so I know what I'm getting.

mine was re spayed under warranty back in the 90's and they did an awesome job but their version of NU is a bit different than the original Mazda paint.

I'm having similar issues right now. My car was repainted less than a year and the paint was VR. I then had a 99 spec wing painted and installed.but it looks more orangeish versus the lipstick red. Each paint was done by a different shop. Cant bring it back to the shop that painted the car because thwur customer service is horrible. It' so stressful. I'm waiting for the snow and salt to go away so I can bring it back to the shop and see if they can fix it. But anyone with experience on paint matching the red fd rx7s that would be great with your input.

just installed a Mazdaspeed wing which was already painted NU and it matched perfect so go figure i guess. pays to go to reputable shop.

Paint naturally fades a little bit over time, especially if the car sits outside in the sun. That may be the right color, but time has changed it a little bit.

I had em blend mine when my Mazdaspeed Protege got run over by a cement truck. At 1st the bumper looked a little too saturated with color. Once they blended it in, It looks great. Not noticeable at all.

Cant they do like home depot and get paint matched?

I thought i was the only one with this problem. I picked my car up after paint and it looked like the duke boys painted it when i picked it up. All it needed was a 01 on the side of the door to make it the new general lee. I was so upset that i went to porsche,chevy and ferrari for ideas of a better red color. Well i decided on corvette torch red and had the car painted with dupont. I know its not oem but it looks great. I will never go back but to each there own.

Update
NU on early models was singlestage and changed to base/clear later on not sure when. I heard it was after 92/93. Had some side skirts painted single stage as the rest if the car was and they matched 100%. As it turns out my hatch was painted by another shop who didnt know better (not did i) base clear and hence the colour difference. I didnt know this first time around until another member point that out that my car is sisngle stage paint. I bet there is a noticeable difference between single stage NU and NU done is base clear.
