1st gen storage box subs
 

Who has had any luck using one or both of the storage boxes in a first gen as a place to put a sub? I want to upgrade the mound's stereo....I'd like to keep it clean and not fill up the back of the hatch with a box. Im thinking of removing one of the storage bins and building some sort of box in there...is there enough cubic feet for a decent sized sub in there? God I hope so.

i checked into that a few years ago and never got around to doing it. an 8" sub made for tight spaces (i think JL used to make one) would be the perfect solution. i was going to put two of em in. one day i will. when i moved i left all my car audio mags in a two huge piles at the curb (no space/time/money to do any mods or keep the mags at the time) some lucky kid saw them,freaked out and took 'em all home...i'm sure he got hooked and is a master installer somewhere by now :) i'll look for my 'calculations' to see what i came up with back then.

Yeah see if you can find those calcs...I haven't looked into how much air an 8" sub needs, but I do know there seems to be a lot of space inside those storage bins, plus the space around them under the hatch which is not occupied. Gotta be enough to get some sort of decent sound, with a nice stealthy appearance.

I had a tube style sub in my last 7, which was an '85 GSL. In order to fit that puppy in there, I had to remove the box, and fasten the lid back over the hole with Velcro. Totally invisible, and sounded great! I wish I could remember the brand, but it probably wouldn't do much good as it was about 8 years ago when I bought it.

Take out the trunk box and measure the hole for dimentions. You'll prbably want to fabricate some kind of bracket to keep it from bouncing around too. :)

A small speaker will do just fine, since it will be centrally located in the vehicle AND in an enclosed space. I think mine was 6" IIRC.

I made the sub box of the Mazspeed FAQ,And it sounded horrible.I wouldn't recommend any size sub in there.Unless you used a tube like NOTAV6 said.But,just my 2 cents.

I am working on a box design for 8" subs in the storage compartments. Only issue you have to think about, is #1 not minding losing most of the storage compartments, #2, being willing to remove the storage box covers, or doing like I am doing, replacing the storage box covers with a speaker cover that will more or less make the speakers invisible.
After I get the boxes built and tested, if they look and sound good, I will post pictures and the design for them.
If I can't get a set of subs to sound good, hidden in the compartments, then I will go without subs all together. I like my 1st Gen, and will not have it's beauty distorted by a huge box under the rear canopy. I am into the clean, respectful look.

I did a custom box for 82transam for a 8" fosgate sub. You basiclly take out the pocket and slide this box in its place. It was built on the spot so i do not have pics. Sean, if your on here post up the pics of the box.
