Windows Vista with haltech DOS software

Might want to stick this thread...

Long story short, Haltech e6k software does NOT want to run under Windows Vista AT ALL. The error i get when running e6k excecutible is something to do with forcing an unsupported full screen mode. I tried and tried with pif and windows compat programs but nothing worked until I searched on google.

Dos Box, a Dos emulator couldnt be easier to use, it works, and its completely FREE! Follow this link.

http://sourceforge.net/project/downl...use_mirror=umn

Once you load up, type "mount c: c:\<path to e6k>" and then you can launch the exe.

One thing I have not tested yet is online mode, but according to the dosbox emulator docs, the serial port should work.

Heres to continued support for the e6k!! WOOOHOOO

Its common knowledge that DOS software doesnt run on XP, you need either Virtual PC (which i use and works perfectly) or DOSBox, follow this link and you'll see all you need to know.

I am currently using an HP Pavilion DV1000, with no serial port, using USB adapters, keyspan and Prolific, and i can connect with no problems to both DOS and Windows through XP Pro.

I also give support to ALL Haltech ECUs from all generations, models and software versions.

But still the best solution to running with older DOS systems is having an old laptop handy for that duty.

Just to clarify, DOS software does run on XP but if it tries to access hardware directly, the Windows HAL will prevent it. Windows does not allow any application direct hardware access.

Virtual PC works great. But one thing to keep in mind is that it kills laptop batteries very quickly. Expect your battery life to be halved.

Completely off topic! -

But if anyone else is like me, who spent their childhood in the 80's and early 90's Dosbox is also GREAT for the oldschool games (eg. Police Quest, Kings Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, Questron, Quest for glory, Monkey Island Series, Rampage... Ect...) I never realized how many games had quest in them

Getting back on topic...

Is the haltech E8 ready to use with Vista?

Claudio RX-7 Mar 17, 2007 03:01 PM

Having also grown up using computers in the 80's, 90's and now in the 21st century i can tell you that its always a problem to try and use somethings with the latest and greatest newest version of an OS platform. I personally didnt upgrade to Windows XP from 2000 untill i was 100% of how all the differences in them worked. I have already read online about lots of problems with current and older hardware and software not being compatible with Vista. I personally think XP right now works perfectly and if you know the old saying "if it aint broke dont fix it", this holds pretty true with our case in point.

I personally use Virtual PC, and have purchased a laptop that has awsome battery life, this HP DV1000 with a 12cel battery actually lasts over 5 hours doing actual tuning with it, it was giving me a few issues at first, but i think i got it all working good now.

So, guys, if you wanna have windows vista, put it on your PC at home, and leave your trusty crap top working with what runs fine.

Just noticed i was going to post a link in my first post on this thread but didnt. :D

Here: http://p210.ezboard.com/fhaltechdisc...cID=1575.topic

There's a pretty good DOSBox explanation on there. And ive been using Virtual PC (i think i should start swaring by it :P) with DOS for quite a while now.

:D

I use dosbox to connect to my e6k through XP, it works great. Had to change a little bit of stuff in the .conf file to get the serial port to work, but after that, no problems.

If you have batter problems just buy an inverter, they are dirt cheap. Or buy a power cable for your laptop that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Dosbox? Operating system? Which adapter are you using?

Dumbed down: "The belkin adapter is a 50-50 shot that it will work, get the keyspan or a PCMCIA adapter off ebay".

Ok, this is really pissing me off!!!! My regular computer at work, which is XP runs the e6k software right away-gets online- with no emulators or anything, so far this is my only solution. Now, I have a new laptop which has the 34mm pcmcia express port and I bought this adaptor(since my usb-serial one didn't work)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PLX-OXPCIe952-...item2303226e0e

and still nothing!!! I went into the settings and used com2(since com1 is being used by something else-that I can't figure out by what. I installed dosbox, no problem there since I am very familiar with dos, but I can't get online. I made a folder named haldos-put all the dosbox files in there along with the e6k files, changed the config file for the serial port on the com2 line. Can anyone think of anything??? Thanks guys!

SirCygnus Dec 7, 2009 09:27 AM

what com port is the haltech connected to?
what port does the pci-e cardbus show up as?

dznutzuk Dec 7, 2009 05:40 PM

Hey, I have the haltech set to com port 2, here are a couple of screenshots of the settings, thanks to anyone who can help!

Ooops, forgot about the pics

Everything is finally working!!! The stupid UAC at first was preventing me from saving the file and I made a duplicate and renamed it-WRONG. Remember to turn it off and the alter and save the file, works like a charm! Thanks everyone!

gxlbiscuit Nov 21, 2010 11:24 AM

what is UAC?

rnz520 Feb 27, 2011 04:34 PM

Dont mean to revive a really old thread here but I am getting really frustrated with this.
I have my car ready to start, all I need to do is put a map on the E6K and crank it and I cant get my laptop to connect.
I have the TrippLite USB to Serial adapter with the correct driver insalled, DOSBOX with all the correct changes to the conf file, everything set to com 1, UAC disabled, running Vista Home Premium, and all I get when I try to connect is to Reconnect Haltech.
If you guys have ANY other tips to this please put them out there since I am out of ideas, I'll continue trying until you guys post up.

This is the same post as I put in the other thread since I am not sure which gets checked more. Thanks a lot
Renzo

Is haltech configured to com1 or 2?
