Why would a Haltech NOT be for me?
 

i am in the market for a stand-alone right now. for the past few weeks I have been trying to read all that i can, but really need a thread of my own to ask the pertinent questions that i have regarding this unit....

the main concern and single question that i am going to start with is.......why would a haltech not be a good unit for my car. i have every major mod with the exception of a radiator. ported, 3mm, big SMIC, full straight exh., and yadda.

through my inquiries, i have talked to many folks, and Chris at RP told me that they only install haltech's on "single torbo race cars".......why would that be. i have heard that they have poor idle quality, fluctuate idle speeds, and do not understand loads like a/c and power steering.....

BUT....

if a haltech is not for me, why does every haltech owner, or supporter on this forum recommend the e6k over the power fc?

this is my first concern.

i really want a tecIII, but might end up with a PFC....

who knows...

I had a Haltech on my non-seq setup and it idled fine. Everything can be done with a Haltech. Chris' point is probably from a sales/company perspective. I know they have customers that have messed it up before and I think they just don't want to deal with a twin turbo setup. Also they can sell you a PowerFC which will do much better on the twins and not have to cut up your wiring.

Any ECU is only as good as the signals it gets and what its told to do with those signals...think about it.

so...by this are you saying that i SHOULD or SHOULDNOT consider the haltech, because of the tuning aspect, even though i will most likely go single in a year or so. this is also why i have been looking into the tecIII.....i simply want the best management for my car, as i do not want to be footing another $9K motor build up in the near future...

Sometimes it is best not to choose the ECU but let the person who wll be tuning your car make that choice.

So it's more like choosing a "tuner". They would be able to tell by your Mods what would work out better for you and for them by having a satisfied customer.

thanks, all of you. the last couple of posts make th emost since to me. i guess that i will get the Pwr.FC, and save the xtra money for the new hood or something else that i have been eyeing.....

Go with whatever system you have the most support for meaning: If you have a haltech mastermind in the area go with that, If you have a Motec mastermind then go with a motec and so on and so on. Haltech E6k seems to be the weapon of choice but there are other Great ECUs out there. I believe that the haltech systems are the most supported in the american rotary community.

That is exactly the reason I will most likely go with a Haltech. When I spoke with Mandeville about it, he recommended Motec. That's fine for him, but he's a 9 hour drive from me. Even at that, the engines I have always seen him working with are NA 3 rotors like the Kudzu from Team Spencer. Haltech support is abundant for the rotary.

As others have mentioned, here and in another popular thread, there are several ECUs that will meet your needs. The challenge is getting it tuned to take advantage of the engine's potential.

I have a Turbo II and Chris from Rotary Performance told be that he didn't recommend it for my car and that it wouldn't idle right, have trouble cold starting, etc.

My car hasn't run better! It idles smooth, starts instantly (but needs to warm up due to the BR10's). I'm not sure about FD's but my fc runs fine. I even have my A/C working and the car doesn't stall with it on.
