Tuning: Spool

Question 1: Should I have an EGT in my manifold before I attempt to tune for quick spool?

any tips or tricks anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated in this thread.

how much gas do you want to save?

leaner with more timing gets the fire hot and spools the turbo pretty fast,

but super rich with grossly retarded timing spools turbos rediculously fast. the problem with that is the manifold, turbine, and exhaust all take a beating from the fuel burning in the manifold.

mine i run pretty lean during the boost transition to save fuel (it's a commuter car), but just play around with it until you find a nice blend of what you want.

good info, thats what I was looking for.

I like the sound of "ridiculously fast". But I do run a cat soooo...I think I'll have to settle for "pretty fast" Are these night and day differences?

So, "pretty lean" = 13.0???

Assumming 13.0AFR, you say more timing...

Question 2: up to how many degrees is considered safe?

since this is below max torque, I feel there is a wider line I can walk and still be safe. Is this a correct statement?

naw, you can tun in a coulpe hundred rpm or so from a normal tune to a spoolup-specific tune, but nothing night/day.

how lean is up to you. my car was in closed loop under positive pressure in certain areas in hte lower rpm range. that's how i got 24 mpg on a beat-down, tired motor i built from spare parts.
