Simple *LOGABLE* EGT setup

Haltech part# 30027

1 EGT probe
1 thermocouple
1 amplifier

0-5v output in one complete package :)

Just tossing it out there for anyone trying to piece together a loggable EGT setup

IAN 10-02-08 06:34 PM

Cool. They were not on the haltech website or at least didn't see this a week ago. I'm going to have to buy one,
I do already have an autometer egt gauge. I wonder if I can tie into or use something from it?

classicauto 10-03-08 07:21 AM

Yeah IAN you'd only really *need* the amplifier to get a 0-5v signal out of it for logging. But I'm not sure how you'd still make the guage work.

I'm really contemplating purchasing one to use in the downpipe and keep the dual EGT's in the manifold jsut as a gauge only. But there's so much other shit I could use.....we'll see......

AlexG13B 10-03-08 10:36 AM

so amplifier would reduce the 12vs going to the reg egt gauge to the 5vs for dataloging?

classicauto 10-03-08 11:00 AM

EGT probes generate only milivolts to "talk" to the gauge.

MV won't work for logging you need 0-5v. The amp changes the MV scale to 0-5v so the ECU will recognize it.

AlexG13B 10-03-08 02:02 PM

got it. so therotically this ampliefier can work with any egt probe and gauge?

classicauto 10-03-08 04:38 PM

Yes, it *should*.....

But if that's all you're after there are places you can acquire the amps seperately...I've just never really pursued it so I don't know where to get them.

I like this system it gives you 2 channels verses just one for both rotors.

http://www.aeroforcetech.com/EGT_components.html

Its a much better price as you almost get 2 for the price of one.

AlexG13B 10-03-08 06:06 PM

isnt 1600f low for a rotary?

I get over that pretty quickly on my pre turbo probes.

AlexG13B 10-05-08 04:53 PM

my prosport goes up to 2,400F

To actually have it display and log temperature you need the E8/11 and the latest firmware. Otherwise any of the ECU's can log the voltage output of the unit on a spare a/d input. You would then have to do the conversion from voltage to temp.

I use an EGT probe and the EGT 5V adaptor from O2 Simulator http://www.o2simulator.com/index.php...=index&cPath=2. Considerably less than $200 for the total although I'm not trying to undercut or hack anyone off here. The 5V adaptor output wires into Spare A/D. Log the voltage. Piece of cake.

Brian that link comes up with "no products in this category"

?

fritts 10-21-08 12:47 PM

Yeah I don't believe they are selling them anymore. They were a great low cost unit and am still using two of them today on my car.

classicauto 10-21-08 01:00 PM

well sonofabitch :)

Any other places that sell those? This thread seems as good a place as any to gather up all the info for making a loggable EGT setup.

Russ Turner from www.dashlogger.com has them as well for great prices. That's where I got mine from.

to bad you can only log 1 egt at a time. :(

Cheaper & Available Now

EGT probes ($40 each): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=110462409059

Signal conditioners ($19.95 each): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=220439357494

Plus some shipping and handling, about $135 for dual setup. The conditioners expect you to supply 12 Volts and send out 0-5V corresponding to 0-1000 C (or max 1260 C with an extra resistor). You can hook this up to your logger or a gauge that takes 0-5V and is calibrated appropriately.

My question: Where do you install them with a stock twins setup? I am guessing drilling and tapping the 1/4 NPT holes into the bottom of the manifold? This would send the probes out into the least congested space for a stock twins setup, no?

C. Ludwig 02-20-10 07:28 AM

Someone did a writeup with pics of a dual EGT install on stock twins. Might have been Howard Coleman. Here is a link to the thermocouples I use. While more expensive they have a longer lead, only 1/8" fitting versus the 1/4", and are adjustable for probe depth.

I've seen the signal conditioners before and wonder how well they work. Some things are just too good to be true. They have a website and the other stuff on their site makes me skeptical. It's far to easy to get the results skewed one way or the other.

Same conditioner here. $.95 cheaper with apparently free shipping.

Found HC's thread. Has more discussion, good info about calibration values to use, and pictures of the setup on a stock twins manifold:

The accuracy is all in the chip and these are "instrument quality" chips. So they ought to work fine. I was going to buy a dual channel unit from Jeff, the guy HC recommended. When I pointed Jeff at the units I found on eBay, he said "buy it!" and he didn't know about this chip, a more compact/cheaper chip (but same maker) than he uses and will probably convert his boards to use these chips.

Yeah I found that later. My pair cost me $22.95 each with shipping. Guess I got ripped off! (just kidding)

The ones I found on eBay actually are 1/8 NPT (not 1/4 as I previously said). I ordered them yesterday and they came this morning via USPS. Wow! The lead length looks fine to me. They do not have the adjustable depth compression fitting, but HC seems to imply in his thread that the sealed type is better - he says his only stick into the exhaust stream 1/2 inch and it is fine. So I think I should be okie dokie.
