running msd with the haltech?

any one done this? hows the result? i want to run better coils than the regular tii coils i have. any suggestions? thanks ahead of time

Well, a couple comments. #1, BDC and the Hitman both have MSD setups included in their writeups. I'd recommend you start on their sites, which have both been posted here before.

#2, MSD ignitions are not necessarily *better* than the stock coils, and many would argue its exactly the opposite. Usually people don't make the switch for *better* reasons, but for something else, e.g. they burnt out their stockers and don't / can't get new ones, they have a totally custom setup and need some feature of the MSD coils, etc...

Is there a particular problem you are having with the stock coils that make you want to switch?

You'll find a LOT of guys who say that the stock TII coils, as long as they are still good, are the perfect item for the job...

If you want to add more spark, you could try adding the FC1000 that RX7.com sells. My buddy has it on his third gen with his stock coils and he loves it.

As to running it with a haltech.. I'm sure it can be done, he does it with a PFC... i just haven't looked into how you would do it!!!

Ive talked to the HITman a lot and he suggests that the factory coils/igniters on the T2s are quite capable of runing high power levels, specially with the haltechs, since you can adjust dwell time on them and get more spark out of them, but then again, its an issue of in what condition are they, how much power do you need, how well connected is everything, and in the likely event of needing real power then an MSD ignition setup or something along those lines is also possible.

Im using a Dis 2 on the leading with a CDI coil, and not running the trailing. I dont know where these guys are coming up with there comparisons but its night and day over factory. My spark is about .5 mm wider and could be used as a plasma cutter. Ive compared it to stock on another car, theres no doubt its better. I wouldnt spend the money on it unless your going to eliminate the trailing, then youd definately want more power for the leading.

Why not use trailing too? Might be yet a better step forwards ;)

Seems to be causing alot of timing problems, split this way or that then theres the whole detonation problem. K.I.S.S. I dont like to get into this b/c all the kids wont think outside the box and like to bitch about what i do with my car. People are cattle they just move with the heard, if one gets away we gota put him down.

I run 3 msd 6A boxes and eliminated the stock ignitors. I have zero problems with this configuration. I am currently running an E6K and will be installing the new E11 within the next couple of weeks.

You can use the stock FC ignitor/coil packs, guys. Works well.

I mean no offence but it does seem that you are the one with the "ousider" attitude. You are always the first to bring up the fact that you don't have thousands of posts.... etc.
I do respect people with viable theorys and thoughts, but if they proclaim that to be GOSPEL they better have proof... simple as that.

But Bond,
I have one piece of advice for you;
If you want people to respect your opinions and thoughts then don't bring them accross like you are a or "the" "supertuner". I mean you if approach a post in a civilized maner and relatively respectfull of the people you are posting to, you will get a far warmer responce. Not everything has to be a "heated" discussion things can be handled civilized.

But that is just my take on things.

I actually prefer them, and I have gotten good results using them.
We're talking about a $1,000+ EMS plus a lot more goodies which cost you a pretty penny.
Even a single-channel CDI box on the leadings will work, and a digital box like this only costs about $180 for a Crane Cams HI-6 or $230 for an MSD Digitial-6.
The theories behind a CDI box is sound, and I like the more consistent spark which is advantageous under heavy boost and higher RPM's.

Jreynish, your right i need to work on that. Im actually not looking for respect, i get enough in my home town, im just posting info on my particular car thats it. I dont charge for advise nor do i keep trade secrets. As far as my post count goes, i really dont have enough time as id like, VWoA seems to want most of it. I think reted has found a computer program that raises your post count, haha.

Kind Regards
mike

msd

the difference between MSD / CDI coils is the number of windings in the primary coil. This value changes how efficient the MSD/CDI unit can work. You can use an msd with normal coils, but it may kill them faster than a stock module.
Although, using a stock module with MSD / CDI coils will produce a vastly smaller spark. Car will probably still run though.

I've also used that particular setup, both with Haltech and with the factory ECU and believe me, you DO feel the difference. As a matter of fact, just the other day i was working on a 3rd gen of a buddy of mine and i was testing spark, and god damn!! if that spark doesnt shoot like a plasma cutter from 2 inches away!! You cant see that on a stock igniter only setup. :D

And in the likely event that you do have the Haltech/MSD combo, setup is a lot easier with no hickups in the middle.

Note: If you do use MSD ignition boxes stock spark plugs will literally die in less than 2000 miles. Mine lasted 3 months. And they dont handle more than 13psi on a Haltech/MSD/TO4/FMIC/ported motor setup. Im looking into these new NGK xxxEIX Iridiums, ive been told by a few people these are good plugs, and not that expensive.

Bond Oct 20, 2004 09:48 AM

Claudio, thats what i said when i say my "plasma cutting spark on the tester".

Claudio RX-7 Oct 20, 2004 10:38 AM

Yeah, its just that i hadnt looked at an MSD amplified spark in quite a while, gave me goosebumps! :D

I run the bad a$$ NGK plugs that are racing plugs specificly for rotaries. I use to run the other plugs and they just get killed under the conditions of my motor. I started running this settup when my motor would hit @ 6500 rpms and have a wierd stumble. We came up with thte theory that the spark wasn't sustantial and was being "blown out" at the high boost levels. Changed to the MSD boxes and NGK plugs, and no problems since. This combo throws a HUGE spark!!!
