Ok..So get this..
Ok here we go.... 88 TII, E6x, stock ignition ect....Setup settings are as specified in above "setup" thread:
Trigger Angle 65 Tooth Offset 11 Spark Mode Distributor Constant Charge Falling Edge 4.5mS Internal Reluctor Trigger Edge Falling Home Edge Falling Trigger Gain 2 Home Gain 2 Cannot get the car to Fire....added fuel...have taken it away....nothing. Plugs get wet after some cranking...and compression numbers are good, so im 99% sure its spark/timing. So, while checking spark we pull a plug wire off the leading coil (as we are cranking). Spark archs a 1.5-2 inch gap from the coil to the wire....car will fire. So what im saying is with the current settings for the ignition, the car will not fire with the wires plugged into the leading coils, but if you pull the wires and hold them about 1.5-2 inches from the coil, it will run. Personally...I am stumped....so here I am....what do the "pro's" think...? |
Are you getting fuel? Have you checked timing while cranking to make sure its set properly?

Its definitely getting fuel. I believe it is something ignition related, it is getting spark, but we can't get my timing light to pick anything up.

CAS stabbed improperly? Maybe its 180 degrees off. I recently got my car running (shortly before I tore the motor back down!) but my cas was a few teeth off so I had to play with the trigger angle to get it to fire. Turn off injection and see if you can find any of the timing marks when cranking. When I DID get timing set I still had to use starting fluid to get the car to fire the first time.
edit: Make SURE timing is set before you use starting fluid otherwise you can have some nasty results. |
This was one of my Bro-Laws difficulty in getting this car running correctly. I believe we sourced a new coil and ignitor on the leading side and it made no difference. I don't believe I had him try new coil wires though. Possibly they are arcing out somewhere. That or maybe its a ground issue but I believe he basically grounded everything just in case.

New wires didnt do much of anything honestly. Looks like I have some wire tracing to do....im guessing something is shorting somewhere or there is a bad ground. Tho, even that seems odd considering I can get it to fire if the wires are pulled from the coils....

Did you get it sparking correctly? I was trying to get him to go LS coils as that would take the ignitor out of it having individual ignitors on the coils.

Ive thought about doing the LS coils as well...Ill play with the current setup a bit more, but if I cant get it worked out here pretty soon Ill make the jump to the LS setup. |
Well did some checking yesterday and the wiring to the CAS and coils seems right....
Im wondering now if the CAS itself may be the culprit? How often do these things fail? |
If you getting spark and fuel the CAS shouldn't be the issue. You can verify though by looking at whether your registering RPM in the Haltech. Also check the trigger diagnostics page under the data pages. Make sure at last home values are constant.

It was turning over a solid 250 RPMs, but it would spike to like 1500 every so often. Not sure what would cause that.

Check the clearance between the magnets inside the CAS. There is a factory spec somewhere in the FSM. Also check all wiring from the CAS isn't looped near any high voltage items liked spark plug wires.
Good luck, trigger jumpyness was something I fought with until I had to change EMS's :lol: |
