Need help wireing up Haltech E6X with MSD 6btm
 

I was told that to run an MSD on a Haltech I need 2 MSDs. 1 for each coil pack. Is that true or is it bullshit ? If it`s true how do I hookup both the leading and trailing coils to 1 MSD. It's a 6btm by the way.

Actually to run MSD's on every channel you would need a minimum of 3 for a 13B.

Or you can do what most other people do and just run the single MSD on the leading.

Further it is not possible to hook a single MSD to all coil packs at the same time. And in my opinion there is little use in having an MSD on every single coil. The leading ignition does the vast bulk of the work.

The BTM is the one with boost retard correct???

Thats a waste if you have a haltech as you can set the timing wherever you want, and it would be a bad thing to have the lead timing drift in relation to the trailing, outside the control of the haltech.

To hook up a single MSD on E6X just pretend the haltech isn't there connect the neg coil output on the leading igniter to the MSD points input wire, the pos coil output goes to the wire that turns on the MSD. 2 wires go to the battery (or one pos battery, and one neg to the chassis). Then the MSD's + and - coil output wires go to the lead coil + and - respectivly. And there you have it. Put the MSD in 4cyl mode as the rotary engine leading will fire with the same duty cycle (number of pulses per revolution) as a 4cyl piston engine with a distributor.

Another way you can hook it up taken right out of an MSD tech manual if you want to use discrete coils if in the attached picture.

This second way has a theoretical advantage, don't know if there would be any actual advantage though, as there would be only a single gap for the spark to jump per firing rather than 2.

Thanks for the info. But when it comes to conecting an MSD to the trailing coil pack how do I do that. I noticed there`s 2 coils on the trailing. Do I splice the positive and negative on both coils and route them to the MSD ? or do I absolutely need an MSD blaster ? And also I forgot to mention I have 2 MSDs. I have a 6BTM with the boost retard and a 7000rpm chip and a 6T made for nascar racing.

Originally I only had the 6T wired to the leading coil and it picked up the signal from an FB distributor. Now I got rid of the distributor and put back my FC crank angle sensor. And I know the crank angle sensor has 2 coils in it. Do I connect 1 MSD to 1 coil and the other MSD to the other coil on the crank angle sensor or do both MSDs pick up the signal from the same coil ?

And also considering I have a 6BTM and a 6T, I need someones expertise on this, which would you recommend I hook up to the leading coil pack and the other to the trailing coil pack ?

In order too hook MSD's up to the trail coil packs of a 2nd gen your would need 2 for trail alone. Trailing cannot run waste spark like leading does. Or alternative for trailing you would need something like a MSD DIS2, the point is you would need 2 channels for trailing alone.

Why use an MSD box with boost retard or a rev limiter when the haltech can set the ignition timing wherever you want, and has a rev limiter.

The system or wiring 2 coils to a single MSD box is for leading only, do not do this for trailing.

Further having an MSD box on the trailing as compared with the stock trail ign will do very little if any good, if it where me I would wire the 6T to the leading and sell the 6btm and keep the trailing stock

Throw that 6BTM away.
It's more headaches than it's worth.
Sell it to some guy who threw a turbo on his non-turbo motor...

I second that. A good tune will always be better than any timing retarding apparatus. If you plan to run the MSD anyway, dont use the retarding feature.

Alright then thanks a lot guys. Originaly I had this MSD hooked up to an FB distributor. Now I put back my FC crank angle sensor. Which wires on the crank angle sensor do I connect to the MSD ? It`s an S5 crank angle sensor by the way.

You connect the CAS to the Haltech then the Haltech output to the MSD input.

connect the haltech output, to the factory lead igniter to the MSD input

Sounds like you need a little help with this installation, you should probably find a shop to do the install and tuning for you so you dont run into a lot of trouble down the road.

I feel confident I can do this installation myself with a bit of help from you rotary enthusiasts, ''props and thanks to everyone by the way'', but when it comes to do some dyno runs and tunning for shure I`ll bring it to a shop.
