litte help with an e8/fd setup?

as i remember, the tooth offset on the e6k's was 5...i just got my fd fired up with the e8 and had my tooth offset at 3.

now the car idles fine, but can someone call me an idiot or give me reassurance on that tooth offset? i'd hate to fubar this thing just because i was too proud to ask.

better yet--if anyone can post up a working e8 map, i'll have a look and maybe steal the ignition settings from it.

thanks in advance

Let me know how this goes. I'm planning to start my e8/fd install in the next few weeks.

You don't happen to be running the stock twins...? If you are, any tips for the install? I'm still a bit intimidated whenever I look at the harness.

Anyways, thanks for anything you can provide.

Greg

na, it's a single.

i SWEAR i got it zero'd yesterday, but it's not there anymore... i might have just wired up the coils wrong. i'll go poke around with it and see what i can figure out.

Claudio RX-7 09-27-05 04:38 PM

Sometimes, sometimes, the offset value will be related to the trigger angle, and there have been instances of similar engines where the trigger angle and tooth offset are different from one to the other. Since the E8 is such a different unit than the E6K i wouldnt be suprised if there was something there too.

If this was an FC, the reason would be because of the insertion of the CAS. Is it possible that you might have connected the sensors backwards?

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-27-05 05:14 PM

i double checked it, but anything's possible...

what gets me is it idles really nicely, but the timing marks are way way off... there's only one way the pulley goes on, so i'm ruling that out.

oh wel...back to work with me...i'll get it figured out :)

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-27-05 05:15 PM

oh wait.. just to make sure--

the ignition wiring would be the same as the e6k in direct fire mode, right? i think the only difference in the way i actually wired it up is i piggy-backed the 2 leading coils and they're both being run from the same wire on the haltech.

if it's not the same as the k, then maybe i just have the coils wired up wrong?

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-27-05 05:44 PM

ah ha!!
the leading spark plugs aren't firing at the same time... i probably just boobed the wiring somewhere.

but just in case, anyone have a working fd map i can double check all my settings against?

Claudio RX-7 09-27-05 09:34 PM

Wait, isnt the FD wired like the FC, with the toggle feature? If this is the case, you should wire the leading coils to the Ign.Out wire only, and the trailings with Dig1 and Dig2, if you want to run direct fire, or Aux.Out for the toggle, i dont know how the original FD igniter works (yet).

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-27-05 11:14 PM

it's all good in direct fire.

i really wanna double check all my trigger and ignition settings against a working map though.

i hooked up the timing light to it and as soon as i open the throttle, the timing goes to hell and i can't even see the timing marks anymore...weird

Stock FC ignition runs toggle.
Stock FD runs direct fire - 3 channels straight into the 3 coils.

i know, but thanks

RETed 09-28-05 03:35 AM

That was for Claudio. :P

my bad

Claudio RX-7 09-28-05 11:20 AM

Thanks guys, i thought the FD had a toggle too. And just to enforce this, my first FC with a haltech, E6S back the day, was runing in direct fire mode, and made 325hp to the wheels on a ported S4 motor venting boost all over the place. So yes direct fire on a rotary, cool.

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-28-05 11:43 AM

so any volunteers for a map?

they're all for the earlier ecu's.

the setup pages are different on the e8.
i dunno what's goin on with the timing though...

Is it for an FC or FD. Also direct fire on an E-8/11 ecu is done differently than on the E-6S/K/X series.

sbd 09-28-05 03:19 PM

I have a couple for fc. Well they are e11 maps but they are the same as the e8's. However being fc, the triger and ignition setups may not be of any help for you.

ahha!!

it is for an fd. so maybe i just got settings wrong...i hope.
can you lend any advice on how to do it with this one?
thanks

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-28-05 11:24 PM

so nobody has a map or setu cheat sheet for an fd w/ e8 or 11?

I would take screen caps of all the setting windows and post those and see if they are right.

That helped me the most when I did a e6x. Typing all the settings is a pain from memory.

this helped me the most when I was setting it up.
https://www.rx7club.com/haltech-forum-62/install-settings-e6x-387833/

you could do somethign similar with the e8.

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-29-05 04:54 PM

haltech finally sent me a base map and guess what...i was right!

all except they had the tooth offset at 10, and it set for waste spark, instead of direct fire. but with only the leading hooked up, you could probably run waste, direct, or dietributor and have it function the same...

so i'm thinking i've got an issue elsewhere. i'll just go check over everything again and see if it's something easy.

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-30-05 01:13 PM

as of now, no spark at all...

i wonder if i killed the ls2 coils somehow? anyone else running them?

constant charge, charge time; ~3.5-4ms

i hope i wasn't supposed to set them for constant duty!

GUITARJUNKIE28 09-30-05 05:36 PM

car is back to running... haltechs map had the tooth offset at 10, but it wouldn't run like that.

tooth offset of 8 and trigger angle of 95 made the timing dead nuts, though.

oh yea...the no spark.... ummmmm, plugs

i had myself a noob moment :P:

so i drove it around the block and it feels about as good as any untuned car with afr's in the 9's and 10's can feel.

ON WITH THE TUNING!!!
