Everytime i try to connet to my haltech it says "unable to open com port, please ensure...." Something along those lines. I tried it with 2 laptops, windows xp and 98. I tried it with f10x and a f9. I downloaded the software from HALTECH.COM and i have no idea what to do.

Switch the comm ports on the USB software. Try each com port. Did you buy the radio shack serial to usb converter?

What USB to Serial addapter are you using, there are units that DONT work. I always recommend the Keyspan USB to Serial addapter, works everytime, no hickups.
|
I have the radio shack one. I just can't stop trying to think what to do. I did almost everything.
Thanks |
I bought chinese adapter for 20 bucks and it works great. Install USB-COM software and try to choose a proper com port.
|
make sure your key is on the On position when you try

These days communication problems are more often than not brought on by the use of an incompatible USB to Serial adapter, this is why i always recommend the Keyspan, and never get either really really cheap ones or from ebay, unless you're getting what i recommend. If you dont, its a 50-50 shot of it working, either it does or doesnt.

$50 cheap ass DOS laptop is best solution. these older ECU's were designed to use DOS. I bought my cheap Compaq for $100 a few years ago and it works perfectly. I have not had any luck with the USB adapters or XP. good luck

+1 for Keyspan USB-Serial Adapter.
I had tried another one with no luck, when I switched to the Keyspan it worked no problem and works every time. |

I actually use it with my P3 laptop with WinXP, and i also use Virtual PC for the DOS stuff, but my lappy has a serial port, and i dont have any issues :D. |
I have all kinds of problems with USB to serial adapters with standalones. Most of the software isn't written very well so it is easily confused. To solve this annoyance, I purchased a PCMCIA to serial adapter and have not had a problem since...
