Laptop for E6K? Win XP?

Hi,

I need some help please... I have an E6K... I am about to get everything installed but am wondering what laptop I can use. I have one currently that has Windows XP and a 15 pin serial port as well as usb ports... Will this work????

I KNOW there is a search option.. I used it and have found multiple answers that oppose each other. Maybe one is outdated.. Some say I can use with DOSBox or other program? Others say E6K will not work with newer than Win 98?

If i can use this PC what cable will i need and also what program to run/ tune the ECU?

Thanks Very much in Advance!
Josh

Windows xp has problems dealing with some legacy applications, but shouldnt be an issue.

just use the DB9 serial cable

is it XP 32 bit or 64 bit? i could never get my 64bit system to do anything at all, wont even emulate DOS... My 32 bit comp w/ XP pro worked just fine

am also wondering the same thing, have all wired and ready to go, just cant figure out what laptop n program i can use.
tried windows 7 with the dosbox thing, n didnt work.

read it could be done on windows vista? here is the how to video

so do i have to get a laptop with windows xp (with 32bit) like mentioned above?
that or vista and do as he did on the video?
just wana figure this out as well since car is ready to go.

sorry to thread jack, after all, were both searching for the same answer :icon_tup:

i couldn't get the platinum stuff to work on XP64, so i would think the dos stuff wouldn't either.

the best way is to find an old laptop with a serial port (cereal port would be even better), and just install DOS, and let it boot right into the haltech software.

we used to use the IBM thinkpads back in the day, they actually were nice little machines.

and just keep it in the car

ok i have 32 bit i guess... just need a serial cable and then what program???

zaridar Jan 23, 2013 11:09 PM

looking at the serial port mine is 15 pin not 9... will that still work? and if so can i just use an adapter cable 9 to 15 female to female?

zaridar Jan 23, 2013 11:13 PM

or wait is this 15 pin VGA?

Sgt.Stinkfist Jan 23, 2013 11:37 PM

15 is for a monitor/VGA. If you dont have a DB9 serial port (9 pin) then you will need a USB to serial adapter cable

zaridar Jan 24, 2013 07:15 AM

Ok cool thanks... Any software needed to run usb to serial through a "com port"??

SirCygnus Jan 24, 2013 07:19 AM

You do not NEED to have another laptop. you can use a usb to serial adaptor and THEN install a VMWARE image of windows xp or even windows 98. i suggest windows XP.

then go to http://www.haltech.com/wp-content/up...01/E6Kv634.zip
and download this. unzip it, and run it inside DOS.

zaridar Jan 24, 2013 12:10 PM

Ok got that but im asking this... when I plugin the USB to serial cable... do I need any software to accompany it or does it automatically make a com port show up on my device manager?

You may need to download a driver for the USB to Serial port cable if it didn't come with the cable. Just do a google search for it, should be easy... I have an Acer Netbook running Win XP, and I was able to use the USB to Serial port cable on it, just had the configure the USB port to be COM 1 port . For E6K, if I recall, you can set it to work on either COM 1 or COM 2 .
After doing those tings, I went online to Haltech's download page for older software , downloaded the E6K 634 and it work. Tried another Netbook with Vista and it didn't work, so Win XP is d one to go with, if you can't get your hands on an old laptop running Win98 or Win95.... hope this helps ya ..

zaridar Jan 28, 2013 10:22 AM

I have an old hp laptop.. Its my wifes.. Not 100% on model. It has xp 32 bit... I guess 64 bit have issues with running e6k software.. then I downloaded dosbox... And e6kv634 software... Used google to find both... Also used google to help figure out if it was 32 or 64 bit...
The video above describes how to set up the usb serial adapter after you have installed it..

Once you download dosbox read the readme file... I believe the above video covers how to use it with e6kv634 as well...

I do not have a good basemap yet and my car does not start so sorry cannot help there yet...
