Haltech IQ3 Dash Speedometer Question
Ok, none of my gauges work in my 88 FC so instead of buying a whole set of new ones (like autometer) I'm highly thinking about getting the haltech dash because I KNOW it will work and prolly be around the same price. My question is (sorry if it's been asked before) how do you get it to read your speed?:scratch: It's a S5 turbo II engine, 5sp tranny, and non turbo rear end, and Haltech E8 if any of that helps.

do you have your speed meter cable connected? You should have a connector on the trans that looks like the speed cable/sensor at the bottom of this picture. the top one is for JC Cosmo and the bottom one is for a S5 FC3S
http://infini-fc3s.cyberosity.com/ga...icture+019.jpg The FC dash gauge uses mechanical speed signal from a cable. The stock speed cable that goes to the dash gauge connects to this speed sensor. The two electric plug go the cars cruse control box. you can use the FSM to find location of the cruse control box. Some cars do not have cruse, but the connector is still on the factory harness and you can tap into that harness and feed the Haltech the speed signal. the cruise control box was in the drivers side kickpanel just above the CPU for the flasher, horn and turn signals. http://fc3spro.com/TECH/TNT/SPEEDSIG...eedsignal.html on my FC ( S5 JDM) the Speed signal wire is green / red bottom row 3rd from the left. Is the sensor on top or the bottom of the transmission? Can I run the wires directly from the sensor cause my stock speedo doesn't work anyways.

you need it to be a 3 wire hall effect sensor to work with the haltech, all the T2 setups i have done i fitted a toyota sensor to the gearbox

If your S5 has ABS you can use the VR signal from one of the tone rings. As 10sec said, the signal needs to be Hall. So, if you use the ABS sensors, you'll need a converter box such as the Haltech DRA. This would also work with the trans pickup that 87GTR posted. If you're crafty you could fit a Hall sensor directly in place of the stock VR sensor on the ABS tone ring. Lots of options.

Its a S4 body with with a S5 turbo II engine, without ABS. Ive heard of hall effect sensors but never heard of how to install one or where to get one, so that's what I need?

I bought an adapter that goes on the stock mechanical speed driver on the transmission which converts it to an electric signal. Haven't hooked it up yet but should work

Racepak sells split collars that can be easily attached to the driveshaft or half shaft. They have magnets embedded in them that can trigger a Hall sensor. Pretty easy. Check out their website.

They also have a print catalog that you can download here, see page 35 for the split collar info. http://racepak.com/downloads/pdf/Cat...cepak_2008.pdf Just like 87GTR stated, your 88 RX7 should have a mechanical speedometer cable that goes into the back of the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster converts this into an electrical signal that you should be able to use for speed. I was able to use it as a road speed input into my Haltech E6K, but don't use it much since my car is a track car and I use GPS for speed. Your factory speedometer may be broken/inaccurate but the electrical signal may still be ok. You won't know until you test it or hook it up. Now if your planning to pull your whole instrument cluster, this method won't work anyway so you'll have to use a different setup as the others have already stated. One more option to throw out to you, run the Haltech IQ3 data logging dash with GPS and use GPS for speed. You won't have to mount any additional speed wires! Just stay away from tunnels! :) |

The GPS receiver is primarily for track mapping. I wouldn't spend the extra coin on the dash if you're not going to use the full features.

Ok, going with the normal IQ3, so back to the hall effect, how do you actually mount the sensor? Do you use a special bracket of some kind? I'm assuming it has to be a certain distance from the magnets correct?

Yes. You will need to fab a bracket. Generally the sensors will mount about .040" off the target. Hall sensors are not real finicky. We have looked at mounting a sensor to the front of the diff housing and using the driveshaft bolts as the target. Problem with using the driveshaft or half shaft is that they will move up and down and the sensor will need to move with them. The outdrive of the half shaft would be another good place to secure a target, as it does not move relative to the diff housing.
Another option is to find a later hub with the ABS tone ring and sensor and use that in conjunction with a converter box. That would be a pretty much bolt in solution. Parts should be pretty easy to come by and the front hubs would be very easy to swap out. Fritts' solution is certainly the easiest and probably most fool proof. No idea on the price though. He and I can both provide the dash and support if you haven't already purchased it. |

Is your car a 4 lug? Why are you swapping the front hubs? And why do you have to swap the spindles? My car was originally a 4 lug, and I just swapped the hubs only if I remember right.
I'm actually in the middle of trying to add individual wheel speed sensors to my Racepak (G2X not IQ3). I was looking into adding a high speed proximity sensor that would read off the back of the front wheel studs, but working on it last night doesn't look promising. The back of the wheel studs are too recessed and couldn't think of a way the sensor I have would be able to reach them without being damaged. I may try to find some abs sensor rings for the front on my car. I haven't worked on the rears yet. Still in the trial stages. Time to post a WTB in the classifieds...... |

Ok, admittedly this could be a stupid response. But I was thinking today since I'm having a the same issue with a 20B swapped FC. But why not just get a digital speedo sensor from a 626 or miata? Hell maybe even one from a ford
